Yongin Special City announced on the 23rd that the Gyeongbu Underground Expressway Project, one of the city’s ‘L-shaped 3-axis road network plans’, passed the preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study). This project aims to expand Yongin’s major transportation infrastructure, and is expected to play an important role in making Yongin a global semiconductor hub city through its connection to the semiconductor expressway.
Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced on the 23rd that the construction project of the Gyeongbu Underground Expressway (Yongin Giheung ~ Seoul Yangjae), one of the city’s key transportation infrastructure projects, passed the preliminary feasibility study review of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. This project is expected to play a significant role in the realization of the city’s ‘L-shaped 3-axis road network plan’, and in particular, it is expected to be an important foundation for Yongin City’s vision of establishing itself as a central location for the semiconductor industry.
The Gyeongbu Underground Expressway Project is a large-scale project to build a 4-6 lane underground road under the Gyeongbu Expressway, and is being actively promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It is expected to relieve chronic traffic congestion on the Gyeongbu Expressway and significantly improve accessibility from Yongin to Seoul.
Yongin Special City established the ‘L-shaped 3-axis road network plan’ and submitted it to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in March of this year. This plan includes the construction of the Gyeongbu Expressway, the Semiconductor Expressway (Hwaseong Yanggam – Yongin Namsa/Idong – Anseong Iljuk) and Provincial Road No. 318. The city emphasized that this road network plan is essential to developing Yongin into a global semiconductor hub.
In particular, the construction of Provincial Road No. 318 is expected to contribute to maximizing the efficiency of the semiconductor industry as it is the shortest route connecting Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus and the Idong/Namsa-eup Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex. Yongin City is actively working to have this project included in the 4th Gyeonggi-do Road Construction Plan (’26~30).
Yongin Special City is also promoting the installation of the Gyeongbu Expressway IC in Platform City, Giheung-gu, to improve highway accessibility for citizens in the northwestern region. This is expected to connect all areas of Yongin more smoothly, thereby promoting balanced development between regions.
Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin City said, “The passage of the preliminary feasibility study for the Gyeongbu Expressway is good news following the expansion of National Route 45 in Cheoin-gu,” and added, “This will further develop Yongin’s transportation infrastructure and solidify the foundation for Yongin to leap forward as a global semiconductor hub city.” He also added that he expects the semiconductor expressway construction project to pass the Korea Development Institute (KDI)’s private sector feasibility study.
The market emphasized that it will continue to work closely with the central government and related organizations to push forward Yongin Special City’s ‘L-shaped 3-axis road network plan’ without a hitch. This is part of efforts to help semiconductor and high-tech industry companies and talents move more smoothly and perform their work.
