The "ten slips" here are an editorial device, binding scattered records into a single line upon one wall. The composition of the ninth ("Await Red Cliffs") and the tenth (the single character 劉) is this commentary's re-creation. 🟠 Romance of the Three Kingdoms chapter 33 compresses Guo Jia's last days into the single matter of the Liaodong expedition. So too is the image of the ten slips hanging as a single line upon Cao Cao's morning wall; no such wall is recorded, yet the habit of keeping counsel-papers within sight until their outcome is realized is consistent with what Pei Songzhi's commentary preserves of Cao Cao's daily practice.

“

✒️ A line from your editor — Dr. Yeon Sam-heum

When the tenth of ten sheets a departed one has left carries only one character, and the rest of the name is blank, that blank is often the heaviest sheet of all.
