After the failure in Goguryeo and a fruitless visit to Japan around 647 (the Nihon Shoki records a visit in the third year of Taika), he turned to Tang. In 648 he reached the Tang court with his son, was warmly received by Taizong, was granted high rank, and, according to the Samguk Sagi, obtained a promise of troops against Baekje. Where a Roman legate might have demanded terms, Chunchu offered deference: he accepted Tang court dress and visited the imperial academy. In diplomacy, humility was an investment.

The promise soon became institutions. Military crises at home, including the Bidam rebellion, bound Kim Yu-sin’s armies and Chunchu’s diplomacy into a single instrument of state.

The result was the fall of Baekje in 660 and of Goguryeo in 668. But victory had a price. When Tang then tried to rule the whole peninsula directly, Silla had to fight its own ally (the Silla-Tang War). An alliance, Silla learned, lasts only as long as interests align. Unlike the feudal bonds of Western Europe, based on personal oaths, this was a state-to-state bargain with a built-in expiry date.

Period

Mid-7th century CE (642-648)

Key Figure

Kim Chunchu, Emperor Taizong, Yeon Gaesomun

Turning Point

Fall of Daeyaseong; mission to Tang

Outcome

Groundwork for ending Baekje and Goguryeo

            🔍 International Academic Perspectives

Korean/Asian Scholars

Most Korean historians treat the alliance as a pragmatic survival strategy against a Goguryeo-Baekje squeeze, with the 648 agreement as the start of joint operations.
