The hand of Zhang Rang (\u5f35\u8b93) had unfolded from their hands. That night Zhang Rang himself walked into a small stream upon the hill and pressed his face down beneath the water. Of the ten flies, the last remaining one had dropped quietly from its seat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Within the night wind of Luoyang, the fourteen-year-old Bian began to weep. The nine-year-old Xie did not weep. He only gripped his elder brother&#039;s hand more tightly. &quot;Elder brother. Can we return home?&quot; Xie&#039;s voice was small, yet it was not the voice of nine years. Bian could not answer. His own shoulders were tilting toward the burning sky of the palace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">At that moment, the smell of earth came up from below the hill. After the earth came leather; after leather, oil. After that came the smell of horses. Not one or two, but several thousand horses advancing this way all at once. The owners of those horses were men of Xiliang (\u897f\u6dbc).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The man at the head of that army was a thick-built fellow with broad shoulders and a turbid look in his eyes. Though he held the seat of grand administrator of Hedong (\u6cb3\u6771\u592a\u5b88), in truth he held some twenty thousand Xiliang cavalry within the grip of his fist. From Lintao (\u81e8\u6d2e) in Longxi (\u96b4\u897f). His surname was Dong (\u8463), his given name Zhuo (\u5353), his style Zhongying (\u4ef2\u9848). His face was thick; his smile was rare. In place of smiling, his mouth kept moving by halves, as if he were lightly chewing on something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Dong Zhuo reined in his horse. Upon the rock before him, two young children were sitting with hands clasped. His turbid eye turned first toward Emperor Shao, Bian, then crossed toward the Prince of Chenliu, Xie. His voice reached the young Emperor for the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">&quot;Is His Majesty truly His Majesty?&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The young Bian tried to open his mouth, yet no line came out. Only his lips trembled; only his breath trembled. Dong Zhuo&#039;s gaze settled turbidly upon those trembling lips. In that moment, the young Xie lifted his head before his elder brother and looked upon Dong Zhuo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">&quot;This one is my elder brother, the Emperor of the Han (\u6f22); I am his younger brother, the Prince of Chenliu, Xie. The elder from Xiliang will have suffered greatly upon the long road. The meaning of meeting these two children this night we brothers shall not forget.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">It was a voice of nine years. Yet that single sentence ran one breath faster than his fourteen-year-old elder brother&#039;s. Dong Zhuo&#039;s eye rested long upon the side of the Prince of Chenliu.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"margin: 32px 0;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\uc0bc\uad6d\uc9c0 365 Day 11 \uc911\uac04 \uc77c\ub7ec\uc2a4\ud2b8\" src=\"https:\/\/wiabook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/samgukji-365-illustrations\/day011\/middle.png\" style=\"width: 100%; display: block; border-radius: 8px;\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">That night, Dong Zhuo&#039;s Xiliang cavalry seated the two young children upon the rear of their horses. The image of two small children sitting behind the saddles was turned to, each in turn, by the twenty thousand cavalry. From no horse did a sound come out. Yet that silence was not the silence of an army, but the silence of men who had already known by themselves that they were holding the fate of a country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The head of the cavalry began to turn toward the southern gate of Luoyang. Five <em>li<\/em> outside the gate, Dong Zhuo slackened the reins. The burning western sky of Luoyang reflected red upon his helmet. Upon the watchtower of the gate, one sentinel saw the redness of that helmet first. He stepped one step backward and opened the gate slowly, halfway. Through the half-opening, it was a gap too narrow for two thousand Xiliang horses to pass at once. Yet before the order to widen the gap came down from above, the sentinel&#039;s own hand pushed the gate out a little more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">That this single push would open one year of a country was something the owner of that hand did not yet know. The footsteps of Xiliang were crossing, today for the first time, into the Han capital of Luoyang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Before that night ended, the palace of Luoyang was no longer the possession of one man. The young Emperor Bian returned. Yet beside his seat, the turbid eye of one man met this day for the first time followed him, step by step. That the shadow of the Emperor had become two required, strangely, no proclamation and no edict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The eleventh night of Book 1 deepened quietly before the hand of one sentinel at the southern gate of Luoyang. The three characters <em>Seoryangjeok<\/em> (\u897f\u51c9\u8de1, the footprint that came from Xiliang) were planted quietly as a seed through the halfway gap of one gate. The seat of blood in the palace courtyard and the middle of the northern plain of Day 10 were gathering, today, into the footstep of a new master at the inside of one capital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"margin: 32px 0;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\uc0bc\uad6d\uc9c0 365 Day 11 \ub9c8\ubb34\ub9ac \uc77c\ub7ec\uc2a4\ud2b8\" src=\"https:\/\/wiabook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/samgukji-365-illustrations\/day011\/ending.png\" style=\"width: 100%; display: block; border-radius: 8px;\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<aside style=\"margin: 0 auto 30px; padding: 28px 32px; background: #f5ede0; border-left: 5px solid #8b6f47; border-radius: 6px;\">\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #5a4530; margin: 0 0 16px; font-family: 'Noto Serif','Times New Roman',serif;\">\ud83d\udccc Knowing Apart \u2014 History (\u6b63\u53f2) vs Romance (\u6f14\u7fa9)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.85;\">\ud83d\udfe2 The <em>Records of the Three Kingdoms<\/em> (Wei Shu, Biography of Dong Zhuo \u8463\u5353\u50b3) and the <em>Book of the Later Han<\/em> (\u5f8c\u6f22\u66f8) plainly record that in the ninth month of 189 CE, Dong Zhuo (\u8463\u5353, style Zhongying \u4ef2\u9848), then seated as grand administrator of Hedong, came up to Luoyang with some twenty thousand Xiliang cavalry, met the two young princes who had fled the palace \u2014 Emperor Shao, Bian (\u8faf), and the Prince of Chenliu, Xie (\u5354) \u2014 and escorted them into the capital. \ud83d\udfe2 The specific detail that Dong Zhuo addressed the young Emperor, that Emperor Shao could not answer, and that the nine-year-old Prince of Chenliu, Xie, answered in his stead remains in a line of the Biography of Dong Zhuo in the <em>Book of the Later Han<\/em>. \ud83d\udfe1 No side-text cited by Pei Songzhi (\u88f4\u677e\u4e4b) transmits the specific scene of one sentinel at the southern gate of Luoyang who pushed the gate out by his own hand. \ud83d\udfe0 <em>Romance of the Three Kingdoms<\/em> chapter 3 dramatizes the composition of Dong Zhuo&#039;s entry into Luoyang and the first meeting with the two princes. This commentary compresses the frame of that adaptation and focuses one point upon the &quot;chewing grain&quot; of Dong Zhuo&#039;s face and the single point of his turbid eye. \ud83d\udd34 The three-character creation <em>Seoryangjeok<\/em> (\u897f\u51c9\u8de1) and the mirror reading by which one year of a country enters through the halfway gap of one gate are reconstructions of this commentary. The gate-warden saw the redness of the commander&#039;s helmet first, and before the order to widen the gate came down from above, he loosened the bar of the gate a little more by himself. The Latin phrase <em>vestigium ab occidente<\/em> (a footprint from the west) was, it is said, inscribed at the margin of that autumn&#039;s record of the gate. On the night when, at the eastern edge, the footsteps of Xiliang crossed through the halfway gap of the southern gate of Luoyang, at the western edge the footsteps of the legion commander were likewise crossing before a gate in the same manner.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<footer>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; font-size: 17px; color: #d4a857; font-family: 'Noto Serif','Times New Roman',serif;\">\ud83d\udcc5 Tomorrow, Day 12: The Night the Emperor Became Two<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.85;\"><em>&quot;Dong Zhuo began, in the middle of the court, to raise the deposition of Emperor Shao, Bian, and the accession of the Prince of Chenliu, Xie.
