Did you eat? Did you take your medicine? When is the next hospital appointment? Those are often the only exchanges we manage, while conversation that truly connects gets pushed aside. Today I’d like to share a way of talking that can give both parents and caregivers a moment to breathe at the end of a day like that.

Why a single old photograph can loosen the tongue

Caregiving brings strange moments. A parent who cannot recall what they had for lunch yesterday may describe, in vivid detail, a neighbor’s name from thirty years ago or the alley of a market they used to frequent in their youth. This isn’t laziness or stubbornness. Memories formed long ago, revisited many times and bound up with emotion, tend to remain intact much longer. That’s why old photographs and objects, rather than recent events, often open the door to easier conversation.

The trouble is that, without realizing this, we tend to keep asking check-in questions like “What did you eat today?” or “What time is your hospital appointment?” These questions are necessary, but they function more like inspections than conversations. For a parent, being asked the same things again and again can feel like being tested, and repeated stumbling over answers can make them withdraw and speak less. By contrast, opening an old photo album and asking, “Where was this taken?” turns a parent from someone searching for the right answer into someone sharing a story. That shift in role matters more than it seems.

In caring for my own parents, I noticed that their voice changes in front of old photographs. They spoke longer than usual, and their expressions grew more animated. A story that demands no correct answer, one where being wrong doesn’t matter, seems to put them at ease. Rather than treating this time as a heavy, deliberate exercise in “dementia prevention,” it helps to think of it simply as a natural habit that keeps the brain healthily engaged.

How a single question can open or close a conversation

Looking at the same photograph, the way a question is phrased can open a conversation or shut it down almost instantly. Questions like “What year was this?” or “What was this person’s name?” are closed questions with a fixed correct answer. When the answer doesn’t come immediately, a parent may grow flustered and simply say, “I don’t know, I don’t remember,” and close the album. Open questions that ask about feelings or context instead — “How did you feel at that moment?” or “Who bought you these clothes?” — have no single right answer, so a parent can continue speaking comfortably.

Many adult children grow impatient at exactly this point. When a parent confuses a name or a date, it’s natural to want to correct them right away — “No, that’s not your uncle, that’s your mother’s brother.” That impulse comes from concern, but in terms of the flow of conversation, it easily turns into putting the parent back on the spot. Remembering that the larger goal is for a parent to keep talking comfortably in the moment, rather than getting every fact exactly right, can help you hold back the urge to correct them.

The order of questions helps too. Start with an appreciative remark — “What a lovely photo” — then ask about the setting — “Where is this?” — and only then move into the story — “What was happening then?” Broadening naturally from admiration to context to narrative allows a parent to draw out memories slowly, without feeling rushed. An unhurried rhythm is itself what makes the conversation feel comfortable.

When memories keep slipping or repeating

It’s natural to feel a certain heaviness when you realize you’re hearing the same story for the third time, or when you notice that the facts a parent describes don’t match what actually happened. The words “You already told me that” may rise to your lips, but saying them out loud can leave a parent feeling as though they’ve done something wrong. Often it isn’t the repetition itself but the sense of being caught out for repeating that makes the conversation harder.

In these moments, it helps to focus less on whether the facts are correct and more on the emotion behind the story. Even if it’s the third time you’ve heard it, responding to the feeling — “That must have been so hard for you” or “It sounds like that was a wonderful time” — lets a parent feel that their story is being respected. Letting a small factual inconsistency pass without breaking the flow of conversation does far more to warm the moment than insisting on accuracy.

That said, there’s no need to feel pressure to do all of this perfectly, every single day. Some days, you may open the photo album only to find a parent tired or reluctant to keep talking. On those days, rather than pushing forward, it’s enough to simply say, “It’s nice just sitting here together today,” and leave it at that. You don’t need to measure the success of a conversation by how much you managed to draw out.

Opening the door to memory together, through scent and touch

As someone who works as an aromatherapist, I’ve often noticed that scent can reach the heart before words do. Placing a small bundle of dried flowers next to an old photo album, or adding a gentle fragrance similar to one a parent used to favor, often helps conversation continue in a more relaxed atmosphere. This isn’t about claiming any effect on a specific medical condition — it’s about the comfortable emotional mood that scent can create.

During these moments, it’s also worth gently holding a parent’s hand or slowly stroking the back of it. As pages of the photo album turn and hands naturally touch, parents often feel a comfort that words alone can’t express. Applying hand cream while continuing the conversation is another good approach — again, not for any specific therapeutic effect, but simply as a time of self-care created by that touch itself.

Time spent this way, woven together from photographs, scent and touch, isn’t only for the parent. It also gives the caregiver a moment to pause, breathe, meet a parent’s eyes and share what’s on their mind. I encourage you to consciously carve out such moments, so that everyday caregiving isn’t reduced to nothing but a list of tasks to complete.

Today’s Heart-Care Practice

★☆☆This evening, choose one old photograph, show it to your parent, and ask just one open question: “Where was this taken?” A question that doesn’t demand a correct answer helps a parent speak up comfortably — and gives you the chance to hear a new story from them.

★★☆Once a week, set a fixed day and time for a “photo album hour.” A regular rhythm gives your parent something to look forward to, and jotting down even brief notes from what’s shared can become a thread for the next conversation.

★★★When you have a little more time, place a favorite flower or a gentle fragrance nearby and lightly hold your parent’s hand as you look through the album together.
