It was the year 168 CE. Three hundred and seventy years had passed since the founding of the Han (\u6f22). The Emperor was young, the ministers were old, and the eunuchs (\u5ba6\u5b98) stood in a single line between the two. Within the palace, a man died; outside, a farmer failed to cross the winter and died \u2014 and the record of that year ended in a line. In the western lands, a drought ran long; upon the eastern sea, the waters overflowed; in the south, a summer hail fell. The heart of all under heaven had been clouding for a long time.<\/p>\n

At a hut in the village of Louxang (\u6a13\u6851\u91cc), in Zhuo County (\u6dbf\u7e23), Zhuo Commandery (\u6dbf\u90e1), of You Province (\u5e7d\u5dde), a man was living. His name was Liu Bei (\u5289\u5099), style Xuande (\u7384\u5fb7). His age was twenty-eight. His height was seven chi<\/em> and five cun<\/em>. His arms ran so long that when he let both hands fall, they reached to his knees; his ears ran so large that when he turned his head, he could see his own ears. His words were few. When he met a man, he neither rejoiced greatly nor grew greatly angry.<\/p>\n

In the days of his childhood, his father had gone early. He and his mother carried on their livelihood by weaving straw sandals and plaiting mats. A saying drifted about that he was a distant descendant of the Han house; yet that saying did not raise the price of a pair of straw sandals by a single coin.<\/p>\n

Yet within the shape of his life there were a few unusual strands. He loved dogs and horses. When a strand of music flowed, he would stop his step and listen a long while. Even in a poor seat, when a garment came to him, he would iron it clean and wear it long. When the profit of a pair of straw sandals came to his hand, he did not take a cup alone at a tavern, but would call the young men of the village and pour a cup to each. In front of the hut of a man whose words were not many, the young men of the village gathered quietly, evening after evening.<\/p>\n

\"\uc0bc\uad6d\uc9c0<\/p>\n

Beside the southeast fence of Liu Bei’s hut stood a great mulberry tree. Its height reached some five zhang<\/em> of a grown man. Seen from a distance, the round shape of its upper leaves looked like the canopy of a small cart. Among those passing by, someone would point at that tree and leave a line behind.<\/p>\n

“From within a house where such a tree grows, a person of high station will one day come forth.”<\/p>\n

That line the child Liu Bei heard. His age had not yet reached ten full years. Playing hide-and-seek with the children of his age under the mulberry, on one afternoon he opened his mouth without warning.<\/p>\n

“I shall ride a cart with such a roof.”<\/p>\n

An uncle who heard that line came rushing, his face gone pale.<\/p>\n

“You fool. Such a line, spoken loose, wipes out this household at a stroke.”<\/p>\n

The child Liu Bei looked at his uncle a long while, then bowed his head. After that, he did not bring that line out from his mouth \u2014 not one more time. Yet that line, because it had not been brought out again, grew quietly inside this child, never erased.<\/p>\n

The uncle had gone, some years back, from illness; the grandfather who planted the tree was likewise no longer there. Only the mulberry kept, year after year, its round shade a little wider, guarding the southeast corner of the hut in its quiet way.<\/p>\n

On this afternoon in the twenty-eighth year, Liu Bei sat quietly beneath the mulberry. In his right hand he held a pair of straw sandals. A thread of wind passed. The round shade of the leaves settled upon his shoulder. The round form of that shade overlapped exactly with the shape of the cart-roof in a line he had never brought out again.<\/p>\n

From the east, news had begun to cross over. Three men of Julu (\u9245\u9e7f) had, it was said, raised a Dao<\/em> (\u9053) of their own, and wrapped yellow kerchiefs upon their heads. The name of the chief among them was passed as Zhang Jue (\u5f35\u89d2). Eight characters rode upon their mouths as they went about \u2014 that the blue sky was to die, and a yellow sky to stand. Beyond the round shade of this afternoon’s mulberry, the far edge of a yellow banner had begun to move quietly.<\/p>\n

Liu Bei lifted his head and looked upon the eastern sky. A single star rose inside his two eyes. The seed of a line never again brought out was, in the round shade of this afternoon, waking once more.<\/p>\n

The first afternoon of Book 1 “Stars Gather” opened quietly beneath the mulberry at the southeast corner of Louxang. A line from a child’s day returned in the posture of a round shade, settling upon the shoulder of a twenty-eighth year. The seed grown quietly inside one man was meeting, a little at a time, with the far news of yellow kerchiefs.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udfe2 The Records of the Three Kingdoms<\/em> (Shu Shu, Biography of the Former Ruler \u5148\u4e3b\u50b3) plainly records that Liu Bei (\u5289\u5099) was a man of Zhuo County (\u6dbf\u7e23) in Zhuo Commandery (\u6dbf\u90e1), You Province (\u5e7d\u5dde); that he lost his father early; and that he and his mother carried on their living by the trade of straw sandals and woven mats. \ud83d\udfe2 The line that his arms were so long his hands reached his knees, that his ears were so large he could see them by turning his head, and that at the southeast of his house a tall mulberry stood in the shape of a cart-canopy \u2014 all these are core records of the same Biography. \ud83d\udfe2 The Biography further records the child Liu Bei’s own line beneath that mulberry \u2014 “I shall ride a cart with such a roof” \u2014 and the uncle whose face went pale as he came rushing with his rebuke. \ud83d\udfe1 No side-text cited by Pei Songzhi (\u88f4\u677e\u4e4b) transmits the specific scene of a pair of sandals in his hand on this afternoon. \ud83d\udfe0 The composition that quietly overlays, upon this afternoon, the far news of yellow kerchiefs crossing in from the east is closer to the opening adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms<\/em> chapter 1. \ud83d\udd34 The two-character creation Sanggae<\/em> (\u6851\u84cb, the canopy of the mulberry) and the mirror reading by which a line never brought out again returns in the form of a round shade are reconstructions of this commentary. There is a seat on which a line from a child’s day, never again brought out from the mouth, grows quietly somewhere inside a person. There is a seed that, because it has not been brought out even once, has not once been erased. Beside the southeast fence of your own afternoon, is there perhaps a tree that casts a round shade? Is there perhaps a posture on which the form of that shade overlaps with the roof in a line you have never brought out again? Might you look, quietly, into the weave of that overlap?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\ud83c\udf0d That Year, on the Other Side of the Earth\u2026<\/h2>\n

In the autumn of 168 CE, on the Danube frontier of Rome’s Marcus Aurelius (reigned 161\u2013180 CE)<\/strong>, within an imperial tent, it is said the philosopher-emperor began quietly to set down the first pages of his Meditationes<\/em>. Beneath the roof of that tent, a round canopy hung; and the shape of that canopy resembled the roof of a single cart. The Latin phrase umbra currus<\/em> (the shade of a cart) was, it is said, inscribed upon the seat of that autumn’s camp. On the afternoon when, at the eastern edge of the world, the round shade of the mulberry of Louxang settled upon a twenty-eighth year’s shoulder, at the western edge the round canopy above one emperor’s tent was settling in the same manner.<\/p>\n

“On one afternoon after that day, at a corner of the market in Louxang, the rough voice of a man came across. He was the man of a butcher’s stall. His name was passed as Zhang Fei (\u5f35\u98db).
