Decision-Making Process and Background of the Korean Field Trip

The Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra performs four times a year and goes on an overseas tour every other year. This year, the destination was Korea, initiated by the orchestra president, Kai, who suggested the trip after watching a YouTube video about Korean temple stays. Most members agreed with the suggestion, and despite some opposition from Japanese members, the overwhelming support from American and European students led to the confirmation of the trip to Korea.

Temple Stay and Korean Food Experience

Upon arriving in Korea, the students headed to Jinwansa Temple to experience a temple stay. The serene temple nestled in the mountains was a refreshing change for the students. The temple food, although vegetarian, impressed the students with its variety and deliciousness, leaving a lasting impression on their taste buds.

Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace and Hanbok Experience

Before visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, the students enjoyed a hanbok experience event. Choosing and wearing traditional Korean clothing while exploring the palace allowed the students to deeply appreciate Korean culture. The elegant simplicity and harmony with nature of Gyeongbokgung Palace stood in stark contrast to the grandeur of European castles, leaving the students in awe.

Safety and Public Facilities in Korea

Another remarkable experience in Korea was the convenience and safety of public facilities. From the quick immigration process at the airport to the clean public restrooms in the city, the students were deeply impressed by Korea’s efficient systems and the consideration of its citizens. The fact that they could carry their belongings safely and comfortably was a revelation, contrasting sharply with their experiences in Europe.

This field trip to Korea allowed Harvard students to admire Korea’s beauty, culture, and convenient public facilities. It is expected that more Harvard students will visit Korea in the future, eager to explore this fascinating country.
