Did they take their medicine on time? Did they eat? And did they fall while I was away? That last worry tends to linger longer than the others. Today, instead of leaving it as a vague unease, I want to turn it into something we can look into ourselves, one thing at a time.

When a Familiar Home Becomes the Most Unfamiliar Place

When we hear the word "fall," most of us first picture something outdoors, like an icy road or a flight of stairs. But from where a caregiver stands, the moments when parents lose their footing come more often inside the home they have lived in for decades. The space is so familiar that they stop watching where they step. Their bodies are not what they used to be, yet their feet still move out of old habit. The house hasn't changed, but the person walking through it has. A home safety check starts with accepting that.

I came to this realization late, while living alongside my own parents. To my eyes, the living room looked perfectly fine. But when I walked through it again at my mother's eye level and with her shorter stride, I began to notice one hazard after another: the floor cushion that was always in the same spot, the corner of the mat that was always folded over, the hallway corner that was always dark. The danger was not hidden anywhere dramatic. It was in places so ordinary that no one ever looked at them twice.

So today's check is less about bringing in new things and more about "looking again." It means walking through the house once with your parents' steps rather than your own, and with nighttime eyes rather than daytime ones. The checklists used in caregiving settings come down to a few places: the entryway, the bathroom, the lighting and the paths your parents use every day. Let's walk through them together, one by one.

The Entryway: The First and Last Step of the Home

The entryway is where the body changes posture sharply several times a day. Your parents stand on one foot to take shoes off and put them on, bend at the waist and straighten up again, and step between floors of different heights. These brief movements, which go unnoticed when we are young, become tests of balance as we age. And when coming home from an outing, they are often carrying bags or feeling tired, which makes them rush even more.

There is a scene many of us know well. A parent stands in the entryway, one hand braced against the wall, the other tugging at the heel of a shoe. Sometimes they hold onto the shoe cabinet door for support, but that door was never built to bear a person's weight. On rainy days, water is left on the entryway tiles, and a thin doormat may be lying on top of it, ready to slide.

In the entryway, it helps to check three things first. First, provide a sturdy, low chair or a place to sit so shoes can be put on and taken off while seated. Second, install a grab bar that can be gripped firmly on the wall beside any step, and build the habit together of holding that bar instead of the shoe cabinet door. Third, replace the doormat with a non-slip one whose backing grips the floor, and press it down by hand now and then to make sure the edges are not curling up.

The Bathroom: Where Water Meets Haste

The bathroom is where the slipperiest floor in the house meets the least stable movements. Water and soap suds stay on the floor, undressing and dressing means standing on one foot, and there is a ledge to step over at the bathtub or shower. Standing up after a long time in warm water can also bring a sudden, unsteady feeling. That is why a bathroom check should look at the floor, the grab bars and a place to sit, all together.

In many homes, parents pull themselves up by grabbing the edge of the sink or the towel rack. A towel rack sits within easy reach, but it is rarely installed to hold a person's weight. Wanting to keep their time washing private, some parents turn down help, then lose their balance the moment they lift one leg to wash a foot while standing. For a caregiver, there is no more anxious time than standing outside the door, listening only to the sound of running water.

Put a non-slip mat or non-slip treatment on the bathroom floor, and it helps to make a habit of wiping away the water once after each use. I recommend safety grab bars, firmly anchored to the wall, beside the toilet and beside the spot where they shower. A shower chair lets them wash and dry their feet while seated, cutting down on the moments spent standing on one foot. Keep shampoo and soap at a height they can reach without bending far over or standing on tiptoe. And if they use bath oil, please wipe up any that drips onto the floor right away, because oil is far more slippery than water.

Light for the Late-Night Path to the Bathroom

No conversation about falls is complete without talking about nighttime. The walk to the bathroom after waking in the night is a walk through darkness while still half asleep. As we age, our eyes take longer to adjust to the dark, and a bright light switched on suddenly can be so glaring that it actually becomes harder to see. So at night, lighting that is "unbroken" matters more than lighting that is "bright."

Many parents feel their way to the bathroom without turning on a light. It may be to save on the electric bill, or out of consideration for the family members they don't want to wake. In many homes, the light switch is outside the bedroom door, so they have to cross a dark room just to turn on a light. Within those few steps lie a doorsill and the slippers left by the bed.

Placing soft night-lights or motion-sensor lights that illuminate the floor along the path from the bed to the bathroom can help reduce steps taken blindly in the dark. Put a lamp by the head of the bed that can be reached and switched on while lying down, and agree together on the order of turning on the light first, before getting up. It also helps to talk about the habit of not walking right away when getting out of bed, but sitting for a moment to catch one's breath before standing up. Check the stairs and hallways as well for spots that fall into shadow during the day, or for burned-out bulbs that have been left unreplaced.

The Things We Trip Over, and How Our Parents Feel

In the living room and bedroom, the key is to look for things that catch the feet: electrical cords running across the floor, rugs with lifted edges, doorsills between rooms, and newspapers or laundry baskets piled on the floor. Each may seem minor on its own, but at a stage of life when the feet no longer lift high and steps become more of a shuffle, these small differences in height can stop a step short. Also worth checking are frequently used items kept too high or too low, forcing your parents to climb on a chair or bend down deeply.

At this stage, though, many families run into an unexpected wall: their parents' feelings. It is not uncommon for parents to turn down a grab bar or a rug rearrangement, saying, “I'm not that old yet,” or “Why move something that's perfectly fine?” When a grown child steps in to change a household their parents have run themselves for so many years, it can come across as hurtful before it comes across as caring.

That is why I suggest making the check something you do "together" rather than something you do "for" them. Ask your parents to lead you around the house, and ask them first where they have felt uncomfortable. When it comes to making changes, rather than doing everything at once, start with the things they choose themselves, one at a time, so the space still remains theirs. Simply running cords along the wall, removing rugs or adding non-slip pads beneath them, and moving frequently used dishes and clothes to a height between the waist and shoulders can make getting around the house noticeably easier.

Today's Heart-Care Practice

★☆☆This evening, try a "nighttime walk-through" with your parents. ① Turn off the bedroom light and sit on the bed together. ② Have your parents walk ahead of you, slowly, just as they usually would when going to the bathroom at night. ③ Follow behind and say out loud, one by one, anything that catches the feet, any spot they reach out to steady themselves on, and any stretch that is too dark. ④ Write down what you find on a single sheet of paper and put it on the refrigerator. Once you're done, walk the same path again with your parents and look at what has changed together.
