Yet in its deepest place \u2014 within the palace of the Emperor \u2014 a strange thing had been unfolding for a long time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">In summer, a fly flew over the Emperor&#039;s table. In spring, a fly brushed the tip of his brush. In autumn, a fly cried at the head of his bed. At first there were one or two. It did not take long for them to become ten. At first the people in the palace raised their hands to drive them off. Then, from a certain day, no one raised a hand anymore. The flies landed on the Emperor&#039;s food, on his paper, on the hem of his robe. Then they began to land beside the Emperor&#039;s ear. The feet of the flies were light. No sound could be heard. Yet at every seat a fly landed upon, the Emperor&#039;s two eyes grew dimmer by one grain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The people of the world called those flies by a single bundled name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\"><em>The Ten Regular Attendants (\u5341\u5e38\u4f8d).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Zhang Rang (\u5f35\u8b93), Zhao Zhong (\u8d99\u5fe0), Feng Xu (\u5c01\u8add), Duan Gui (\u6bb5\u73ea), Cao Jie (\u66f9\u7bc0), Hou Lan (\u5019\u89bd), Jian Shuo (\u8e47\u78a9), Cheng Kuang (\u7a0b\u66e0), Xia Yun (\u590f\u60f2), Guo Sheng (\u90ed\u52dd). Ten names. Among them the Emperor called Zhang Rang <em>Afu<\/em> (\u963f\u7236), &quot;my father.&quot; It was a palace in which the Emperor of a land called a eunuch, not his own begetter, by the name of father.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The ten flies were doing, each at his own seat, his own work. Offices were sold; ranks were sold. The price of selling office (\u8ce3\u5b98) was set. The seat of grand administrator: two thousand piculs&#039; worth of grain. The seat of provincial inspector: four thousand piculs. The seat of one of the Three Excellencies: one thousand catties of gold. The man who paid received the seat; the man who did not pay received nothing. Where there was merit but no money, no seat came down; where there was money but no merit, the seat came down. The name of the illness was never settled. Only, his headaches ran deep, his breath ran short, his two eyes grew often blurred. The Ten kept watch by turn at the door of the sickroom. When the door opened from within, it was surely the hand of a eunuch. When someone tried to open it from outside, a eunuch&#039;s line made the door close again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">&quot;His Majesty is at present dreaming. Do not wake him.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Behind that single line, the ten flies were crying quietly, each in turn, beside the Emperor&#039;s ear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The Emperor had two sons. One was Bian (\u8faf), son of the Empress He (\u4f55\u7687\u540e). The other was Xie (\u5354), son of the Honoured Lady Wang (\u738b\u7f8e\u4eba). Bian was fourteen, Xie was nine. One line of succession had split in two. The Ten were pushing one; the Grand General He Jin (\u4f55\u9032) was holding the other. Two lanes of a single road had met at the center of the palace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">At the seat of the prefect of Pingyuan, Liu Bei heard this news that evening. The step of rumor was quick. Liu Bei called Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to the rear garden of the office and seated them. The three sat around a single low table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">&quot;Younger brothers. The palace at Luoyang has been occupied by ten flies. A fly sits beside the Emperor&#039;s ear. That Emperor will not last much longer. Behind that, the flies will swarm more widely into the midst of the two young princes. Our step, from this place of Pingyuan, is the posture of waiting and reading, from a distance, the grain of those flies.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">Guan Yu stroked the tip of his beard. Zhang Fei nodded deeply. The eyes of the three, this evening, looked quietly toward Luoyang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">After a short silence, Zhang Fei offered a low line. &quot;Elder brother. The rod of Anxi would not reach ten flies. A rod is the grain of a single blow; a palace is the grain of a thousand walls.&quot; Liu Bei nodded slowly. &quot;Younger brother. For the grain of a thousand walls, neither rod nor blade is the answer. What we must carry from this place is a grain that can walk through a thousand walls without breaking a single wall \u2014 a grain that keeps standing even when the walls choose to fall of themselves.&quot; Guan Yu laid down his cup quietly. The tip of his beard held still for a long while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 24px; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify; color: #2c2416; line-height: 1.95;\">The ninth evening of Book 1 deepened quietly in the rear garden of the Pingyuan office. The three characters <em>Sipseungjeong<\/em> (\u5341\u8805\u5ef7, the court of ten flies) were being planted as a seed: the deepest grain inside the palace of Luoyang. That the Emperor called Zhang Rang <em>Afu<\/em> (\u963f\u7236) is also a phrase kept intact in the &quot;Accounts of the Eunuchs&quot; (\u5ba6\u8005\u5217\u50b3) in the <em>Book of the Later Han<\/em>. \ud83d\udfe2 That Emperor Ling took to his sickbed and that a succession struggle rose between his two sons, Bian (\u8faf) and Xie (\u5354), is a core record of the same book. \ud83d\udfe1 No fragment cited by Pei Songzhi transmits the specific use of the image of &quot;flies.&quot; \ud83d\udfe0 The specific composition by which a fly moves across the Emperor&#039;s table in summer, the brush-tip in spring, and the bed-head in autumn, along with the specific numbers of the price list for the sale of office, are adaptations drawn from the opening of <em>Romance of the Three Kingdoms<\/em> chapter 1, which this commentary focuses one grain more tightly upon the image of &quot;flies.&quot; \ud83d\udd34 The three-character creation <em>Sipseungjeong<\/em> (\u5341\u8805\u5ef7) and the mirror reading by which the Emperor&#039;s two eyes grow blurred by one grain at every seat a fly lands upon are reconstructions of this commentary. The voices of the attendants could not be heard, yet the grain of the emperor&#039;s decisions grew more blurred, one grain at a time. The Latin phrase <em>decem muscae in aula<\/em> (ten flies in the court) was, it is said, inscribed at the margin of that summer&#039;s palace record. On the summer when, at the eastern edge, the ten flies of the Luoyang palace cried quietly beside the Emperor&#039;s ear, at the western edge the ten attendants of the Palatine were likewise, in the same manner, crying low.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<footer>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; font-size: 17px; color: #d4a857; font-family: 'Noto Serif','Times New Roman',serif;\">\ud83d\udcc5 Tomorrow, Day 10: The First to Die<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.85;\"><em>&quot;Emperor Ling passed away.
