At the fiftieth seat of Book 2 "The Woman Beneath the Moonlight<\/em>," from the moment the seed within a Minister's sigh of Day 30 (\u5606\u4e2d\u7a2e) budded into the woman beneath the moonlight of Day 31 (\u6708\u4e0b\u5973), until the imperial carriage reached Luoyang of Day 49 (\u6d1b\u967d\u8f26), a great flame of fifty days had burned through half of all under heaven, and was quietly subsiding.<\/p>\n

After the woman beneath the moonlight's two feet narrowed into the distance of one spear (Day 32 \u4e00\u621f\u8ddd), and passed the step at the Fengyi Pavilion (Day 33 \u9cf3\u5100\u6b65), the line reached the thrown halberd (Day 34 \u64f2\u621f\u6012) and the seat after the cut cap-strings (Day 35 \u7d55\u7e93\u5f8c). Then the dust of the road to Meiwu (Day 36 \u90ff\u8def\u5875), the secret plan of the thatched hall (Day 37 \u5802\u5bc6\u8a08), and the Cheolicho<\/em> rhyme (Day 38 \u5343\u91cc\u8349) joined into a single thrust at the Northern Yimen (Day 39 \u5317\u6396\u4e00). The lamps of Meiwu went out one by one (Day 40 \u5862\u71c8\u76e1); and Jia Xu's single word (Day 41 \u8cc8\u8a61\u8a00) laid the Minister's leap at the Xuanping Gate (Day 42 \u5ba3\u5e73\u6295) upon a capital.<\/p>\n

A father's fall upon the road (Day 43 \u7236\u6b9e\u9014), a plea to Beihai (Day 44 \u5317\u6d77\u63f4), and the single bow of a lone rider (Day 45 \u55ae\u9a0e\u5f13) wove together the grain of the east. The fire of Puyang (Day 46 \u6fee\u967d\u706b) and the beard of Cao Cao (Day 47 \u4e00\u9aed\u8a08) became a plan within fire. After them, Tao Qian's third yielding (Day 48 \u4e09\u8b93\u5f90) and the carriage to Luoyang (Day 49 \u6d1b\u967d\u8f26) settled upon the seats of an eastern commandery and a capital.<\/p>\n

Within that great flame of fifty days, a Grand Preceptor fell; a Minister leapt; a father fell upon the road; a commandery was yielded thrice; an emperor's carriage crossed eight hundred li<\/em> and stood again upon a heap of ashes. At the center of that flame, a woman's two feet pierced the fate of two men together, and the grain of one beard deceived two eyes and two ears at the same moment.<\/p>\n

This evening, upon the ashes of Luoyang, Emperor Xian sat alone. Upon the main hall of Xuzhou's office, Liu Bei sat. At Yanzhou's main camp, Cao Cao sat. Toward Jiangdong, Sun Jian's son Sun Ce was moving. Four men at four seats lay side by side under the same sky. Book 2's latter arc was beginning to tighten slowly at the center of those four seats.<\/p>\n

Beside those four men, four lesser seats also waited, ready to be named more fully in the last ten seats. L\u00fc Bu, at Xiaopei of Xuzhou under Liu Bei's tolerance, watched his halberd lean against a wooden post in the small courtyard. Yuan Shu (\u8881\u8853), at Shouchun in Huainan, carried a small vermilion box hidden within his bosom \u2014 brought to him by the waters from Sun Jian's family. Yuan Shao (\u8881\u7d39) in Jizhou counted his provinces as a man counts coins in a pouch. Chen Gong, having left L\u00fc Bu's side in one of the small partings of the past year, sat somewhere upon a road that no chronicle would ever quite name. Four major seats and four minor seats; a balance of eight, waiting for a tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The mid-peak of a book is also a moment of silence before the naming of later seats. Tonight's silence belonged not to any single speaker but to the space between the four major seats and the four minor seats. A chronicle that does not mark such silences will lose the weight of its later chapters. This commentary marks this evening's silence here, at the fiftieth seat.<\/p>\n

Four years since Minister Wang Yun's passing. Four years since Dong Zhuo's fall. Four years since Diaochan walked quietly out of Meiwu and went somewhere toward Xuzhou. One year since L\u00fc Bu left Chang'an and settled in the small seat of Xiaopei (\u5c0f\u6c9b) of Xuzhou. The breaths at the center of a flame lay, this evening, beneath the same sky. Each of those four years had its own interior weather \u2014 its own harvests and its own famines, its own coronations and its own burials, its own small marriages and its own great betrayals. The commentary cannot name all of them. It names only the ones whose names fell within the center of this flame.<\/p>\n

The fiftieth evening of Book 2 "The Woman Beneath the Moonlight<\/em>" deepened quietly at the center of four seats. The three characters Osipyeom<\/em> (\u4e94\u5341\u7130, a single flame of fifty days) were planted as the seed of a peak: the breath in which the twenty seats of Book 2's first half (Days 31\u201350) gathered at one place. Book 1's thirty seats (Days 1\u201330) had gathered within a Minister's single sigh; this evening, Book 2's twenty seats gathered at the center of a great flame.<\/p>\n

From tomorrow, Book 2's latter arc opens. The first morning of Xuchang, the seat of the bait of two tigers, the bow at Yuanmen, the crown at Shouchun. The breath of four seats lies within Book 2's final ten seats.<\/p>\n
