Cheongna Lake Library, a branch of Incheon Library, will run a citizen-participation humanities program titled ‘SF Humanities Project: Contemplating Humanity and the Future Through Literature’ from September 2 to November 18, using science fiction (SF) as a medium to reflect on humanity and the future.

Cheongna Lake Library, a branch of Incheon Library operated by the Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae), announced that it will run the ‘SF Humanities Project: Contemplating Humanity and the Future Through Literature’ from September 2 to November 18. The program was organized after being selected for the ‘2026 Humanities on the Road’ open call, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and administered by the Arts Council Korea and the Korean Library Association.

The program is designed to explore science, philosophy and the humanities in an integrated way, using science fiction (SF) as its medium. Its distinctive feature is enabling citizens to reflect, from a humanistic perspective, on questions of humanity and the future in an era when science and technology are rapidly changing the way we live. The lectures are divided into three areas: ▲Understanding Science Fiction (SF) ▲Connecting Science Fiction (SF) to the Real World ▲Meet the Author.

In the ‘Understanding Science Fiction (SF)’ area, Shim Wan-sun, a leading Korean science fiction critic, will serve as lecturer, introducing the history and current state of science fiction along with its characteristics and how to read it. In the ‘Connecting SF to the Real World’ area, Dr. Lee Myung-hyun, head of the science bookstore Galdda and a doctor of astronomy, will lecture on aliens in science fiction literature and the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project, along with a field trip to the Okto Space Center. Science communicator Lee Eun-hee, who writes under the name Harihara, will offer a fresh reading of science fiction from a biological perspective, while philosopher Dr. Ahn Kwang-bok, a philosophy teacher at Jungdong High School, will explore humanity’s transformation in the age of artificial intelligence and the future of civilization through the lens of science fiction and philosophy.

In ‘Meet the Author,’ writer Kim Chang-gyu, author of 「The World From Which We Were Exiled」, and writer Sim Neo-ul, author of 「I Must Never Grow Old So Uglily」, will be invited to share their creative processes and the visions of the future that science fiction depicts.

The lectures will be held every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. from September 2 to November 18. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis via the Cheongna Lake Library website, and further details can be found on the library website or by phone (☎032-563-8125). Going beyond the simple delivery of knowledge, the program is expected to broaden the scope of local lifelong education, serving as an open venue for learning where citizens imagine and discuss future society on their own.

Lee Eun-jeong, director of the city’s Cheongna Lake Library, said, ‘I hope this program will give citizens an opportunity to imagine future society through science fiction (SF) and to reflect together on human values and the direction of life amid the changes in science and technology,’ adding, ‘We look forward to the enthusiastic participation of interested citizens.’
