Uiwang City is expanding the ‘Elderly Driver’s License Voluntary Surrender Support Project’ to reduce traffic accidents involving elderly drivers and create a safe traffic environment. The city plans to increase the amount of local currency from the current 100,000 won to 200,000 won starting September 1.

As traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers have increased recently, Uiwang City decided to expand incentives ahead of other cities and counties to prevent this and encourage the use of public transportation. In particular, through an agreement with Uiwang Police Station, a one-stop service is provided where gift certificates can be received immediately at the police station, greatly increasing the convenience of returners.

Kim Seong-je, the mayor of Uiwang, said, “The return of driver’s licenses is an important decision that will contribute to creating a safe traffic environment for senior drivers,” and emphasized, “We will continue to develop various policies to guarantee citizens’ traffic safety and the elderly’s right to mobility.”
