The city won the award for the second consecutive year, following its previous win in 2023, and secured a commendation from the Minister of Employment and Labor and a financial performance bonus of 5 million won.
The city considers ‘job creation’ as the best population policy and the best welfare, and has received favorable reviews for actively implementing job creation projects by selecting the following four focus areas: ▲ revitalizing employment in industrial complexes, ▲ attracting future industries and creating an ecosystem, ▲ creating jobs through strengthening corporate competitiveness, and ▲ expanding support for jobs for vulnerable groups.
In particular, the city was praised for ▲establishing the nation’s first ‘Employment Service Integrated Network’ to provide various employment services in one stop to citizens in need of jobs through organic cooperation with the Ministry of Employment and Labor; ▲systematically supporting the difficulties of companies located on Geobuk Island by operating the ‘Turtle Island Job Team’ along with the mayor-led ‘Turtle Island Vitality Promotion Team’ in the process of newly developing the Geobuk Island Marine Leisure Complex; and ▲promoting a specialized project to support small business owners struggling due to rapid interest rate hikes and decreased consumption, which resulted in the hiring of 138 people and support for labor costs for 120 companies.
According to the results of a regional employment survey by Statistics Korea in the second half of last year, the female employment rate in Siheung City increased by 2.5 percentage points (p) year-on-year to 52.2% (49.7% in 2022 → 52.2% in 2023), the number of employed people was 307,000 (300,900 in 2022 → 307,000 in 2023), which is 102% of the previous year, and the number of employment insurance subscribers increased to 144,000 (141,614 in 2022 → 144,347 in 2023), which is 102% of the previous year.
Mayor Lim Byeong-taek of Siheung City said, “In these difficult economic conditions of high interest rates, high prices, and high exchange rates, winning the job creation award for two consecutive years is an invaluable achievement,” adding, “As this is the result of public-private partnerships to create jobs, we will continue to listen more closely to citizens’ concerns about jobs and further strengthen cooperation and communication to create local jobs.”
