A photograph in the Dong-A Ilbo of September 21 would carry the caption “The eve of Chuseok, yesterday, on the Han River.” Meanwhile a vast stone building near Gwanghwamun Gate, the Government-General headquarters, was twelve days from its formal opening on October 1. We could not confirm the weather or prices for this date, so we leave them out. <\/p>\n

We could not open the September 19 papers themselves, so we report only what the records confirm. In March 1926 the paper received its second indefinite suspension for printing a telegram that Moscow’s International Peasant Union sent to Korean farmers on the anniversary of the March 1st Movement. Editor-in-chief Song Jin-u and publisher Kim Cheol-jung were arrested and sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment and four months’ confinement respectively. The suspension lasted 44 days, and the paper resumed on April 21. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\u270a The “Rambling Remarks” Case<\/h3>\n

A column of August 22, “Hoengseol Suseol,” led to charges against writer Choi Won-sun under the Security Law and Kim under the Newspaper Law. At the Seoul District Court on September 8, prosecutors sought eight months’ imprisonment for Choi and six months’ confinement for Kim. We could not confirm the verdict. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Students arrested after the June 10th demonstrations were still in pretrial detention. That phase ended only on March 31, 1927, and final verdicts came on February 13, 1928. The Seoul Youth Association split into new and old factions from September, and the Chongwoo Society regrouped on September 28, a current that would lead to the Singan Society, a joint front of socialists and nationalists. In China, the National Revolutionary Army took Hanyang on September 6 and Hankou on September 7, while Chiang Kai-shek stayed at his Nanchang headquarters. In Japan’s Mie Prefecture, the trial over the January 3 killing of two Koreans at Kinomoto ended with verdicts in October. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

On the morning of September 18, a Category 4 hurricane made landfall near Perrine, Florida, about 15 miles south of Miami, around 7:00 AM. At least 372 people died and damage reached roughly $100 million; northern newspapers exaggerated the toll. In Europe, Germany was admitted to the League of Nations on September 8 with a permanent Council seat, and on September 17 Aristide Briand and Gustav Stresemann met in the French village of Thoiry. On this very Sunday, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson announced a legal defense fund in Los Angeles, and the physicist Masatoshi Koshiba was born in Japan. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
