On August 22, 2024, Gyeyang-gu conducted a large-scale reception and relief training to accommodate and support residents evacuating from the five West Sea islands in the event of a mock provocation by North Korea, led by Mayor Yoon Hwan. This training, which was conducted as part of the 2024 Ulchi exercise, aimed to strengthen the local response system and enhance cooperation with relevant organizations to quickly and safely protect residents in the event of a crisis.

This training was conducted at the Parkchon Sports and Culture Center in cooperation with Incheon Metropolitan City. Various organizations participated, including the Gyeyang Fire Department, Gyeyang Police Department, the Korean Red Cross, the Army, the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, and the Gyeyang-gu Volunteer Center. This training emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts among these organizations to respond to potential military provocations from North Korea.

The training demonstrated practical measures to protect the population, including distribution of relief supplies, medical and quarantine support, psychological counseling, educational support, infant and toddler care services, and group feeding. These processes were designed to simulate actual responses in the event of North Korean artillery fire or other localized provocations in the West Sea.

Former Mayor Yoon Hwan, who attended and observed the training, emphasized the importance of preparing for such scenarios. Minister Yoon emphasized, “In a situation where North Korea continues to heighten military tensions by using balloons, we must be fully prepared for the possibility of localized provocations such as artillery fire on the five islands in the West Sea.” He continued, “Today’s training is very meaningful,” and added, “We will continue to strengthen cooperation with relevant organizations to protect the lives and safety of residents.”
