서울 동대문구 외대앞역 2번 출구 도보 3분 거리, 7층짜리 벽돌 건물의 2층에 위치한 로스터리 카페 키부키(KiBuKi)는 이제 막 창업 3개월 차에 접어든 따끈따끈한 공간이다.

Located just a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of HUFS Station in Seoul’s Dongdaemun-gu, KiBuKi is a hidden gem of a café on the 2nd floor of a 7-story brick building.

Only three months into operation, the café already resonates with many university students and locals for its relaxed ambiance, signature filter coffee, and carefully crafted interiors.

하지만 그 짧은 시간 속에서도 김기범 대표의 섬세한 취향과 뚜렷한 방향성은 카페 곳곳에 깊숙이 배어 있다. 이름에 얽힌 철학부터 공간 구성, 필터 커피의 진심까지.

고요한 가운데 깊은 울림을 주는 이 작은 공간은 외대생들과 지역 주민들에게 조용한 오아시스 같은 안식처가 되어가고 있다.

‘커피 한 잔이 하루의 기억이 되길’ 바라는 청년 사장의 고백을 지금 만나본다.

Ⅰ. 가게 이야기

Ⅰ. The Beginning

Q. 카페 ‘Kibuki’를 열게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?

엄청 특별한 계기가 있었던 것은 아닙니다. 커피를 좋아헀고 그 중에서도 필터 커피를 좋아했습니다. 필터 커피를 처음 접했을 때 다양한 원두에서 다양한 향과 맛을 느낄 수 있다는 게 신기했고, 카페라는 공간이 주는 힘이 있다고 생각이 들어서 나도 좋은 커피를 소개하고 좋은 공간을 다뤄보자는 생각이 컸던 것 같습니다.

Q: What inspired you to open KiBuKi?

Nothing too dramatic—I’ve always loved coffee, especially filter coffee.

What amazed me was how each bean could express such different aromas and flavors. I also believe in the emotional power of cafés, so I wanted to create a space where I could introduce people to great coffee and a great atmosphere.

Q. 이름 ‘Kibuki’에는 어떤 의미가 담겨 있나요?

큰 뜻은 없습니다. 뜻이 있는 특정 단어들을 계속 찾다가 문득 ‘뜻에 국한되어 거기에 갇히게 되는 그런 브랜드를 만들고 싶지 않다’는 생각이 들었습니다. 이후 친구가 제 이름을 부르다 몇 가지 알파벳이 빠진 ‘키부키’라는 단어를 얘기해줬고, 편한 어감이 마음에 들어 키부키라는 이름을 고르게 되었습니다. 키부키라는 이미지(정체성)를 만들어가자는 생각을 했습니다.

Q: What does the name ‘KiBuKi’ mean?

Actually, it doesn’t have a set meaning. I tried finding meaningful words at first, but felt they might limit the brand’s potential.

A friend randomly called me “KiBuKi”—a playful twist on my name—and I liked the sound of it. I decided to build the identity around that feeling, rather than a dictionary definition.

Q. 이 공간(인테리어/분위기)을 이렇게 만든 이유가 있으신가요?

인위적인 느낌을 최대한 배제하려고 노력했습니다. 자연스러운 걸 좋아해서 노출 콘크리트와 바닥을 살리고 그 위에 자연의 재료인 나무를 얹어서 네추럴한 무드를 나타내고자 했습니다.

Q: What kind of vibe did you aim for in designing the space?

I tried to eliminate anything artificial. I love natural textures, so I kept the exposed concrete and original floors. Then I layered in wood elements to create a natural, grounded mood.

Q. 가장 인기 있는 메뉴는 무엇인가요? 이유도 알려주세요.

신기하게도 필터커피를 많이들 즐겨주십니다.

제가 로스터리 카페이기도 하지만 요즘 스페셜티 커피에 대해 즐기는 분들이 전보다 많아진 것 같습니다.

저는 라이트 로스팅을 지향하는데요, 생두마다 가지고 있는 특성을 온전히 전달해드리려 심도 있게 로스팅을 진행하고 있습니다.

그 외로도 키부키 커피와 카다멈번을 자주 찾아주시는 것 같습니다.

Q: What inspired you to open KiBuKi?

Q. 가장 애정이 가는 메뉴는 어떤 건가요?

아무래도 싱글 원두로 내려드리는 필터 커피입니다.

Q: What’s the most popular menu item?

Surprisingly, our filter coffee.

More people seem to enjoy specialty beans these days. I aim for a light roast to highlight each bean’s unique traits.

Other favorites include our KiBuKi Coffee and Cardamom Bun.

Q. 디저트나 음료 외에 손님들이 좋아하는 포인트가 있다면요?

공간을 좋아해주시는 것 같아요.

주변에 이런 카페가 없었는데 너무 이쁘고 좋다는 말씀을 많이 해주시고, 그릇이나 잔, 식물들을 물어봐 주시는 손님들이 많이 계십니다.

사실 제가 무엇 하나를 놓더라도 꽤나 오랜 고민을 하고 그 자리에 두고 있는데, 그런 것들을 알아주시는 것, 감사할 따름입니다.

Q: Which item are you personally most attached to?

Definitely the filter coffee made from our single-origin beans.

Q: What do customers love aside from the food and drinks?

I think many people come for the space itself.

They often comment on how beautiful and cozy it feels.

Some even ask about our cups, plates, and plants—which means a lot, because I really think hard about every single detail.

Ⅲ. The People

Q. 기억에 남는 손님이나 에피소드가 있으셨나요?

처음 로스팅한 원두로 필터를 내려드렸던 손님이 계셨는데, 드셔보더니 너무 맛있다는 칭찬을 해주신 기억이 잊혀지지 않습니다.

Q: Any memorable customers or stories?

Yes—one guest tried our first-ever roasted bean, and said it was “incredible.” I’ll never forget that moment.

Q. 주로 어떤 손님들이 많이 오시나요?

외대 학생분들과 주변 거주민들이 많이 와주시는 것 같습니다.

아직 단골분들은 많지는 않은데, 조금씩 쌓여가는 것 같아 감사하고 더 맛있는 커피와 빵을 제공해 드리려 매번 노력하고 있습니다.

Q: Who usually visits KiBuKi?

Mostly students from HUFS and local residents.

We don’t have a lot of regulars just yet, but they’re slowly building, and I’m grateful. I do my best to serve better coffee and baked goods every time.

Q. 앞으로 Kibuki를 어떻게 키워가고 싶으신가요?

싱글빈을 잘 다루는 곳으로, 그리고 이문동에서 로컬 카페의 입지를 다지고 싶습니다.

행복이 가득한 곳!

Q: What’s your long-term vision for KiBuKi?

I want to build a strong local café in Imun-dong, one that’s known for its single-origin expertise.

And above all, I want it to be a space full of daily happiness.

Q. Kibuki에서 손님들이 어떤 기억을 가져가길 바라시나요?

새로운 커피의 경험이 되었으면 하고, 그저 행복한 하루의 일부분이 되었길 바랍니다.

커피든 디저트든 그게 뭐든 말이죠.

Q: What kind of memory do you hope visitors take with them?
