That Gongsun Kang was thereupon invested as General of the Left (左將軍) and Marquis of Xiangping (襄平侯) is also in the histories. 🟡 Pei Songzhi (裴松之) cites the Wei Shu (魏書) and the Hero's Record (英雄記) to add that before beheading the two men, Gongsun Kang held a council with his circle. 🟠 Romance of the Three Kingdoms chapter 33 dramatizes this as the moment Guo Jia's "single subtle line" becomes reality. This commentary keeps only the spine of that dramatization, adding two beats of silence: the beat in which a chest's lid is opened, and the beat in which Cao Cao, without a word, draws the silk back down. 🔴 Popular tradition says the faces of the two Yuan brothers resembled each other because they were kin; no such note survives in the histories. A later Tang-era retelling adds that Cao Cao, upon closing the silk a second time, ordered the two heads buried together in a single grave rather than displayed — an act of restraint unusual for a warlord of his age. The histories neither confirm nor deny this, but the stage of silence in this commentary aligns with that tradition.

“

✒️ A line from your editor — Dr. Yeon Sam-heum

There are days when waiting is harder than winning, aren't there.
