The southeast of the peninsula held a patchwork of small Jinhan polities, and Saro was one of them. It was less a kingdom than a federation of village powers. Each clan has a different origin: heaven’s light, the sea, the forest. Read cautiously, they preserve the memory of different groups being absorbed into one polity, much as Rome’s story of Romulus, the Sabines and Latin neighbours folds several peoples into one origin tale. <\/p>\n
The succession itself follows a recognisable rhythm. A new clan enters through marriage to the preceding house, steps aside after a generation, and returns several generations later. Talhae was son-in-law to King Namhae. King Beolhyu was linked to the Kim through his mother, and his queen is recorded as a niece of Kim Alji. This looks less like conquest and more like turn-taking inside a marriage-bound coalition, closer to a rotating alliance of noble houses than to a Roman legion-backed usurpation. <\/p>\n
Underneath sat the six-village (Yukbu) system, where a council of village chiefs, the Hwabaek in later tradition, decided matters by consensus. The king was closer to a first among equals than an absolute monarch, rather like an early medieval war-leader dependent on his magnates. The royal titles show the shift: Geoseogan and Chachaung, then Isageum, then the grander Maripgan. After Naemul took the throne in 356, the Kim line held the crown hereditarily, and the six villages became the administrative core of the capital.
