Sejong Special Self-Governing City held a grand ’79th Anniversary Liberation Day Celebration Ceremony’ at the city hall’s women’s room on August 15th, and commemorated the joy of liberation and the noble sacrifices of our ancestors together with the citizens. The event was attended by about 300 people, including bereaved families of independence activists, members of the Liberation Association, heads of veterans’ organizations, and important guests, adding to its significance.
The celebration began with a pan flute performance by Sejong City’s pride, the ‘Kkumendul Ocarina Team’, followed by the national anthem, a commemorative speech by Eom Dae-hyeon, the head of the Sejong City branch of the Korean Liberation Association, a congratulatory speech by Sejong City Mayor Choi Min-ho, the singing of the Liberation Day song, and three cheers led by Park Chae-gyu, the representative of the bereaved families of independence activists.
Mayor Choi Min-ho said in his congratulatory speech, “Sejong City will begin by reexamining the bases of the Korean imperial family’s independence movement, unearthing the unseen history of the independence movement and reviving its value,” and “Through this, we will complete Sejong City as a future strategic capital infused with the spirit of creation and challenge.” He also emphasized, “Based on the great spirit of dedication, solidarity, and cooperation left behind by our ancestors, we will open a new future together with our citizens.”
After the celebration, the United Cultural Foundation’s performances of ‘Saljjagi Obseye’ and ‘Let’s Live in Cheongsan’ further heightened the celebratory atmosphere of Liberation Day. This celebration will be remembered as a meaningful event that reflects on the meaning of liberation and shares the noble values of the independence movement with citizens.
