In the past, the area around Dongdaemun City Library was called Usan-gak-gol (雨傘閣里) or Useon-dong (遇仙洞) . Usan-gak (雨傘閣) was the name of the house where Ha Jeong (夏亭) Yu Gwan (柳寬), who served as the Right State Councillor during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty, lived . Ha Jeong (夏亭) was known as an honest official for his upright life, to the point that on rainy days he would hold up an umbrella inside his room to avoid the rain .

Also, from the east of Dongmyo (東廟) in Sungin -dong to the south of Sinseol-dong, there was an oval-shaped racecourse along Cheonggyecheon- ro . The racecourse was originally located in Ichon-dong , Yongsan , but the facilities were washed away during the great flood in 1925, so it was moved to the area around 85 Sinseol- dong , and it is said that it functioned under the name of Gyeongseong Racecourse (京城競馬場) from 1928 until it was moved to Ttukseom in 1954 .

Currently , in Sinseoldong, there are public institutions such as Dongdaemun Library , Dongdaemun Post Office , Dongdaemun Registration Office , Seongbuk Waterworks Office , and Usangak Park .
