Continuing the Tradition of Culture in Bukchon, the Craft Production Site of the Joseon Dynasty

Bukchon is a region where craft workshops that supplied crafts to the Joseon royal family in the past are concentrated, and even today, there are workshops of craftsmen who continue the tradition of traditional crafts located all over the place. Based on this historical background of Bukchon, Jongno-gu has prepared a time for craftsmen and participants to communicate closely and deeply understand traditional culture.

The ‘Jongno Light Workshop Stroll’ program is held on August 24, September 7, October 5, and November 9, with different themes every month, such as ‘lacquerware’, ‘natural dyeing’, and ‘Korean paper crafts’. Participants can closely observe the craftsmen’s work process and participate in making crafts themselves. This will be a valuable time to deeply understand craftsmen and traditional culture, beyond simply appreciating the work.

How to apply and participate in the program

Advance reservation required, 50,000 won per session

The ‘Jongno Light Workshop Stroll’ program can be applied for through the Seoul Public Service Reservation, and advance reservation is required. The experience fee is 50,000 won per session, and anyone of elementary school age or older can participate. For more information, contact the Bukchon Traditional Craft Experience Center or the Jongno-gu Tourism and Sports Division Tourism Business Team.

Jongno-gu said, “Through this program, we will be able to increase understanding of traditional crafts and experience the beauty and excellence of our precious traditional culture firsthand,” and added, “We hope that many people who are interested will apply.”
