Incheon Michuhol-gu (District Mayor Lee Young-hoon) announced on the 27th that the 1.4km section of ‘Inha-ro Ginkgo Tree Road’ around the back gate of Inha University was finally selected as the ‘2024 National Excellent Management Tree Road’ hosted by the Korea Forest Service.
The ‘Excellent Management Tree-lined Road’ system was first implemented this year to discover and share excellent tree-lined road construction and management cases of each local government. The top 6 tree-lined roads were selected out of 30 across the country through evaluations of landscape, ecological health, citizen participation, maintenance, and safety.
Inha-ro Ginkgo Tree Road was once an area where there were endless complaints requesting tree species renewal due to the foul smell of ginkgo fruit, and was in danger of being removed. However, through resident surveys, resident information sessions, and resident meetings, methods such as improving the shape of ginkgo trees and harvesting fruit early were sought, and it was reborn as a prestigious tree-lined road where residents and street trees can coexist.
Michuhol-gu has implemented projects such as the creation of a pedestrian-friendly road behind Inha University and a specialized street creation project to resolve complaints about ginkgo tree fruit and improve the landscape. In addition, it maintains and manages a safe and beautiful street environment through management of unique tree shapes, continuous environmental patrols and maintenance, and street tree risk assessment and diagnosis.
A former official said, “Street trees are an important element in determining a city’s image, and we will continue to do our best to create and manage beautiful tree-lined streets.”
Meanwhile, this year, a youth flower road connecting Inha Cultural Street will be created across Inha University, which previously had only street trees, to provide a more pleasant street environment.
