The USFK plays a vital role in maintaining stability in Northeast Asia beyond the defense of Korea. As a strategic asset to counter military threats from China and North Korea, the presence of the USFK contributes to the interests of not only Korea but also the United States. Therefore, the argument that Korea should bear a greater share of defense costs overlooks the role of the USFK.
2. Increase in Korea’s defense budget
South Korea has already been steadily increasing its defense budget. In 2020, the defense cost-sharing increased by more than 1 trillion won, which shows that South Korea is already contributing to the defense of the United States. In this situation, it can be argued that the demand for additional increases is excessive. South Korea is continuously investing to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
3. Interdependence of the alliance
The ROK-US alliance is based on the principle of mutual defense. The argument that Korea should bear a greater share of defense costs distorts the essence of the alliance. The defense cost sharing among allies should be done as part of mutual cooperation, and it is not desirable for one side to unilaterally bear a greater burden.
