The Incheon Metropolitan Government announced that it has confirmed 15 recipients of the Citizen Award to mark this year’s Citizens’ Day.

Established in November 1978, the Incheon Citizen Award is the city’s most prestigious honor, now in its 48th year. It is divided into 13 fields across four categories — the Social Public Service Award, the Filial Piety Award, the Industrial Development Award, and the Educational Development Award — and is presented to citizens who have contributed to the development of the local community and to fostering a bright and healthy social atmosphere.

A total of 39 candidates were nominated for this year’s Citizen Award. Following a review by the Citizen Award Screening Committee, composed of 15 members including city council members, local elders, academics, and heads of civic organizations, 15 final recipients were chosen across 10 fields. The inclusion of a screening process involving outside figures, beginning from the nomination of candidates, is seen as a mechanism to maintain the fairness and authority of the award.

The Citizen Award is significant in that it is not confined to particular professions or prominent figures, but rather shines a light on ordinary citizens who have contributed to public service, filial piety, and industrial and educational development in their own everyday settings. The achievements of recipients over nearly half a century have also accumulated as a record revealing the values the local community aspires to.

The awards ceremony will take place at the 62nd Citizens’ Day ceremony on October 10.

Mayor Park Chan-dae said, ‘On behalf of Incheon’s 3.05 million citizens, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all the recipients who have devoted themselves to the development of Incheon in their respective positions,’ adding, ‘I hope that the dedication and achievements of the recipients will serve as a widely admired example for the community and become a precious force in creating a new leap forward and new hope for Incheon.’
