The Songdo International Library in Yeonsu-gu District (Mayor Lee Jae-ho), Incheon, will hold a humanities lecture on July 14 under the theme ‘Why Crime Films Captivate Us.’ The culture and arts program is scheduled for the evening to accommodate office workers and local residents who find it difficult to take part in library programs during the daytime.

The lecture is the second installment of ‘After-Work Culture Recharge,’ an evening culture course for office workers and residents. Its distinguishing feature is the adjusted time slot, which allows participants to engage with the humanities in a relaxed setting after leaving work.
The lecture will be given by pop culture critic Kim Bong-seok, author of “Film, Crossing Genres” and a former reporter for Cine21 and The Hankyoreh. The session will trace the history of Korean crime films and their representative works while analyzing the significance of crime films as a ‘mirror of the times’ that reflects society.
Any adult with an interest in film and the humanities may take part. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the Yeonsu-gu Municipal Library website starting at 10 a.m. on the 3rd.
A library official said, “We hope this will be a meaningful time to broaden humanistic perspectives by unpacking, in an accessible and engaging way, the reasons crime films are consistently loved and the social and cultural messages contained within them,” adding, “We look forward to strong interest and participation from local residents who love film.”
