With a full-scale heat wave approaching, a hands-on welfare program to look after neighbors vulnerable to the heat has been rolled out in Manseok-dong, Jemulpo-gu, Incheon. The Manseok-dong Community Social Security Council (Chair Kim Eun-hee) said on the 2nd that it had carried out the "Beat the Heat Cooling Pad Support Program" for local residents vulnerable to the sweltering weather. The program was arranged to help neighbors who have difficulty using cooling appliances get through the summer.

The support targets a total of 20 households, including seniors living alone and low-income families that are especially vulnerable to the heat. Following last year's cooling-blanket support, this year cooling pads were delivered directly to each home, and rather than simply handing over the items, the council also checked on the well-being of the recipient households.

The program was planned with the aim of providing practical help to neighbors who struggle to properly use cooling appliances such as air conditioners or fans amid the heat waves that recur every year. Starting from a proposal by a council member, it took shape as a summer-tailored welfare program.

The cooling pads delivered are products made of cooling material that help regulate body temperature in summer, and can be laid on the floor or on bedding for comfortable use. When used together with an air conditioner, they retain the cool air and double the sense of coolness. Council members visited each home in person to deliver the items, while checking on recipients' health and providing guidance on how to act during heat waves.

Kim Eun-hee, chair of the Manseok-dong Community Social Security Council, said, "A heat wave is not merely sweltering weather but a disaster that threatens life and safety," adding, "I especially hope to reduce the harm that vulnerable groups may suffer and to offer them emotional comfort, and we will continue to actively help vulnerable residents get through the summer safely."
