The Saemaul Women's Association of Daecheong-myeon Township (Chair Lee Jeong-hwa) in Ongjin-gun County, Incheon, treated local senior citizens to kongguksu, a summer noodle dish made with cold soybean broth, as part of a free meal-sharing event. The Daecheong-myeon Saemaul Women's Association said it held the "Free Meal Sharing with Love" event at the Seonjin-dong senior center on July 10.

The event was organized to support healthy eating for senior citizens during the sweltering summer season and to put the community's culture of sharing into practice.

On the day, members of the Saemaul Women's Association carefully prepared kongguksu and yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) for the seniors, offering a warm meal along with conversation to check on their well-being. The cool, refreshing kongguksu was especially well received among the seniors, given that the summer heat often saps appetite. The meal proceeded in a cheerful atmosphere filled with laughter and friendly conversation among the seniors.

"I feel a great sense of reward watching the seniors enjoy their meal and see them so pleased," said Lee Jeong-hwa, head of the Saemaul Women's Association. "We will continue to carry out sharing activities for local senior citizens and work to build a warm community."

Han Sang-hyeok, head of Daecheong-myeon Township, said, "I am grateful to the members of the Saemaul Women's Association for carefully preparing this free meal event despite the sweltering heat. We will continue to actively support sharing and volunteer activities that involve the whole community, and work to build a warm Daecheong-myeon where sharing thrives."

Observers note that in Daecheong-myeon and other island areas of Ongjin-gun County, where the proportion of elderly residents is high, regular meal-sharing programs run by such resident self-governing organizations serve as an important pillar of elderly care.
