The animated film “David,” billed as “the beginning of the greatest story ever told,” is currently drawing strong audiences in theaters.
[코리안투데이] Animated Film ‘David’ Draws Crowds as the Film That ‘Surpassed King of Kings’ |
The film traces the journey of a shepherd boy named David who eventually becomes king, rendered in 3D animation. The poster features symbolic imagery centered on David, including a giant wielding a spear, a horned beast-like figure, and a tree in full bloom, alongside the taglines “the beginning of the greatest story” and “the talked-about film that surpassed King of Kings” — a clear nod to the biblical showdown between David and Goliath.
The Korean release features a star-studded dubbing cast: Park Bo-gum voices David, Jang Kwang voices Samuel, and Cha Ji-yeon voices Nitzevet, lending the characters vivid presence. The casting of well-known actors is seen as a strategy to make the film more accessible to local audiences. Despite being animated, the film aims for a narrative scale comparable to live-action, with images of soldiers’ flags filling the horizon hinting at large-scale spectacle.
Distribution is handled by Sunrise, ANGEL, and Lotte Entertainment. Animated films built around religious narratives remain a relatively unfamiliar genre in Korean theaters, but similar titles have appeared more frequently in recent years, forming something of a trend. Marketing that positions the film against “King of Kings” is seen as an attempt to underscore its completeness and scale within that context.
As a summer release aimed at family audiences, it is expected to be a strong option for parents looking for content to watch with their children. Viewers without religious background are also expected to be able to engage with the film through its universal themes of growth and challenge, while the sweeping music and visuals are cited as elements best experienced on the big screen.
