Jemulpo-gu District (Mayor Kim Chan-jin) in Incheon has partnered with the private sector to improve housing conditions for vulnerable households living in substandard environments. The district said on the 30th that it carried out a housing environment improvement activity on the 28th for vulnerable households in Hwasu 1-dong and Hwapyeong-dong.

The initiative was organized as part of the "MG Hope Sharing Social Solidarity Economy Organization Support Project," which is being carried out by the Hwasu Garden Village Management Social Cooperative with funding provided by the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (MG Saemaul Geumgo).
The household that received support is home to an elderly resident living alone who is suspected of having dementia. It was found that urine and feces, along with household waste, had been left unattended for a long time, resulting in a severe indoor odor and an urgent need for housing environment improvement.
The improvement work brought together multiple organizations, including the Hwasu Garden Village Management Social Cooperative, the Hwasu 1-dong and Hwapyeong-dong local community welfare councils, the MG Saemaul Geumgo volunteer corps, and the Jemulpo-gu District Volunteer Center. These groups jointly took part in clearing waste piled up inside and outside the home and creating a more pleasant living environment.
The activity is regarded as an example of public-private cooperative care, in that a social economy organization, a financial institution, a local welfare council and volunteer groups worked together to directly improve the living conditions of an elderly resident living alone who had fallen into a blind spot in the welfare safety net.
"This was a meaningful activity in which the public and private sectors worked together to improve the housing environment of vulnerable groups and put community care into practice," said Mayor Kim Chan-jin. "We will continue to do our best to eliminate welfare blind spots and improve housing environments by linking with various local resources."
