심민경은 다수의 개인전과 국제 아트페어를 통해 꾸준히 활동하고 있다. 2025년 개인전 The Great Catsby를 비롯해 런던 Affordable Art Fair, 홍콩 Affordable Art Fair, LA Art Show 등 세계적인 미술 행사에 참여하며 국제적인 인지도를 넓혀 왔다.
김현수 기자 [incheoneast@thekoreantoday.com
Sim Min Kyung Brings Musical Sensibility to Korean Painting and Presents Her Work on the Global Stage in Venice
Art can transform a person’s life and give birth to an entirely new language. Artist Sim Min Kyung had been pursuing a career as a musical performer when an unexpected hand injury became a turning point in her life. She subsequently shifted her focus to Korean painting and began building a new artistic world of her own. Although she stepped away from music as a profession, music continues to live within her work, and every painting is created on a foundation of musical rhythm and emotion.
In 2026, Sim Min Kyung is scheduled to present her Korean paintings at In Venice: Traces of Water, a special exhibition of Korean artists held in connection with the Venice Biennale. Through her work, she seeks to convey the resonance of humanity, nature, and life to international audiences. The exhibition is a special project designed to introduce the artistic vision of Korean artists on one of the world’s most closely watched contemporary art stages.
Currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Oriental Painting at the Graduate School of Hongik University, Sim Min Kyung has developed a distinctive artistic practice that combines traditional Korean painting materials with contemporary sensibilities. Cats are among the central subjects of her work. Yet the cats in her paintings are not merely animals. They appear as symbolic beings that embody human emotion, memory, healing, and coexistence.
The first quality viewers encounter in Sim Min Kyung’s work is a profound sense of stillness. Her black cats merge with forests, carrying within them the cycle of life, while her white cats dissolve like mist and move between the boundaries of reality and dream. The empty spaces in her paintings do not represent silence alone. They function like rests in music. Although no sound can be heard across the canvas, viewers can still sense an underlying rhythm.
This is the defining characteristic of Sim Min Kyung’s artistic language. In her work, music is transformed from an art that is heard into an art that is seen. The composition flows like a musical movement, repeated brushstrokes create rhythm, and the spreading pigments and open spaces resemble musical breathing. While preserving the formal qualities of traditional Korean painting, her work proposes a new visual language that translates musical time, rhythm, and emotion into painting.
Sim Min Kyung has maintained an active career through numerous solo exhibitions and international art fairs. Her 2025 solo exhibition, The Great Catsby, was followed by appearances at major international events, including the Affordable Art Fair in London, the Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong, and the LA Art Show. Through these opportunities, she has continued to expand her international presence. In 2026, she is also scheduled to participate in the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong and the LA Art Show. Her participation in the Venice special exhibition is expected to introduce new possibilities for contemporary Korean painting to a broader global audience.
The cats that repeatedly appear in Sim Min Kyung’s paintings can also be understood as portraits of modern people. At times they appear lonely, at other times warm and comforting, and often they are shown as beings closely connected with nature. Their golden eyes create an emotional exchange with viewers. In this sense, the works go beyond animal portraiture and become psychological portraits reflecting the human interior.
The global art world has shown growing interest in the contemporary expansion of Korean painting. Sim Min Kyung is drawing attention for combining traditional ink-and-color techniques with musical emotion and modern narratives. Her work demonstrates that Korean painting is not simply an art of the past, but an international visual language capable of connecting the present with the future.
The Venice Biennale is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading platforms for contemporary art, bringing together museum professionals, collectors, curators, and artists from around the globe. Sim Min Kyung’s Korean paintings are expected to do more than introduce the beauty of Korean aesthetics. Through universal themes such as music and painting, nature and humanity, healing and coexistence, her work is poised to build a deep sense of connection with international audiences.
