The Incheon Metropolitan Government announced that Nam Young-hee, Vice Mayor for Global City and Political Affairs, visited the Homeplus Guwol branch on August 13 to inspect the reopening of Homeplus stores in the Incheon area and to encourage workers and tenant business representatives. The visit was arranged to hear firsthand from those on the ground who had suffered during the suspension of operations and to review measures for stabilizing employment and the local commercial district.

According to the Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok), the visit took place as five stores in the Incheon area, including the Homeplus Guwol branch, officially resumed business on August 13. Vice Mayor Nam checked on store operations while listening to the on-site voices of workers and resident small business owners who had endured job insecurity and declining sales during the suspension period.
After receiving a briefing from Homeplus officials on the reopening and operational status of the stores in the Incheon area, Vice Mayor Nam toured the leased shops and the large-mart sales floor in turn. She then met with on-site workers and tenant business representatives to hear their concerns directly.
Vice Mayor Nam Young-hee said, ‘I hope this becomes a source of strength for both workers and small business owners and breathes new vitality into the local economy,’ adding, ‘We plan to continue providing the support needed to ensure job stability for workers and to help resident small business owners return their operations to normal.’
The suspension of a large mart affects the local commercial district as a whole, as it is directly tied not only to the livelihoods of store workers but also to the sales of small business owners who make their living in the leased shops inside the mart. This reopening is significant in that it gives these workers and self-employed operators an opportunity to return to work and restore their means of livelihood.
To minimize the damage caused by the Homeplus suspension, the city has continuously held meetings with related agencies such as Homeplus, the employment center, and the district office to discuss measures for supporting employment and small business operations. In particular, it is running a reemployment support program linked with related agencies for workers who left their jobs at closed stores, and it has provided a total of 65 cases of business stabilization funds amounting to 1,916.25 million won to small business owners operating in the leased shops.
The city said it plans to continue working with related agencies to support job stability for workers and the normalization of operations for small business owners.
