The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) will open a permanent exhibition to the public on August 15, Liberation Day, that brings independence patriot Yu Gwan-sun and other female independence activists back to life as three-dimensional images (holograms) at the Yeooksa women’s prison of the Seodaemun Prison History Hall. Past photographs restored through artificial intelligence are rendered as holograms, allowing visitors to view the patriots as if facing them in person, without any separate equipment, and even to engage in interactive experiences.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will open a permanent three-dimensional image (hologram) exhibition at the Yeooksa women’s prison of the Seodaemun Prison History Hall from August 15. Beginning with an opening ceremony on August 14, the exhibition will be open to the general public the following day, Liberation Day.

Yeooksa is a historic site where numerous female independence activists, including patriot Yu Gwan-sun, were imprisoned. This exhibition is distinguished by its precise restoration of their old photographs using artificial intelligence technology, which are then rendered as three-dimensional holograms. Without wearing glasses or any separate device, visitors can view the exhibition as though facing the patriots right before their eyes, and can also experience interactive displays.

Composed of a total of eight cells, Yeooksa illuminates the history of the women’s independence movement in sequence, with each cell carrying a different theme. Cell 1 addresses the formation of Yeooksa and its historical significance; Cell 2, the women who took part in the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919; and Cell 3, the growth of the women’s independence movement in the 1920s. Cell 4 compares the lives of first-class and fourth-class inmates, Cell 5 depicts childbirth in prison, and Cell 6 shows women workers who resisted labor exploitation in the 1930s. Cell 7 presents encounters with independence activists, and Cell 8 contains records and remembrance of the imprisoned female independence activists. The composition of the exhibition, however, may change in its presentation methods and content in accordance with historical verification and other considerations by the Seodaemun Prison History Hall.

This exhibition was arranged as part of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s project to support the commercialization and demonstration of three-dimensional image (hologram) technology. Building on the achievement of establishing a hologram service demonstration and experiential showroom at the Seodaemun Prison History Hall in 2024, the Seodaemun-gu Urban Management Corporation and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (President Park Yoon-kyu), the project’s lead institution, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) early this year, which led to the permanent exhibition at Yeooksa.

Since 2024, the Ministry of Science and ICT has been supporting the full cycle of three-dimensional image (hologram) specialist companies, from the productization of research and development outcomes to their commercialization, in order to help these firms grow. For companies that possess technological capability but struggle with commercialization, it provides tailored support such as R&D-based product manufacturing, performance and service verification, minimum viable product (MVP) testing, technical consulting, promotion at domestic and international exhibitions, and investment attraction.

This exhibition is significant as an example of advanced technology expanding beyond industry into the realm of history education and remembrance. By allowing visitors to directly face and interact with the lives of female independence activists previously known only through photographs and records, Yeooksa has been reborn as a ‘living digital historical space.’ Marking the 80th anniversary of liberation, it is expected to serve as an occasion for citizens to feel the sacrifice and spirit of the independence movement more vividly.

Nam Cheol-gi, Director-General for Software Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, ‘This exhibition is a deeply meaningful case in that it revisits the lives of female independence activists in history on the basis of the excellent technological capabilities of domestic hologram companies,’ adding, ‘We will continue to support virtual-convergence companies, including those in three-dimensional imaging (holograms), so that they can keep growing across various fields such as culture, society, and industry.’
