Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) is launching a campaign to raise residents' awareness of the early symptoms of cerebrocardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke through the practice of walking. The Ongjin-gun County Public Health Center announced on Aug. 20 that it will jointly run the "Walk-On Red Circle Challenge" with Inha University Hospital's Incheon Regional Cerebrocardiovascular Disease Center for 20 days, from Sept. 1 to Sept. 20.

The theme of this year's challenge is "Know the Early Symptoms of Cerebrocardiovascular Disease! Walk-Go!" Going beyond a simple walking campaign, the initiative aims to increase residents' physical activity while also building their ability to recognize early symptoms and respond quickly in emergency situations such as myocardial infarction or stroke. Health authorities note that in cerebrocardiovascular diseases, the time elapsed between onset and treatment greatly affects prognosis, making it important for people to be familiar with early symptoms in advance.

The challenge is open to Ongjin-gun County residents and county office employees. There is no separate application process; participation is arranged through the "Ongjin-gun Residents' Walking Room" community on the mobile walking application WalkOn, with advance registration opening on Aug. 24.

Completion of the challenge requires meeting two conditions. First, participants must accumulate a total of 150,000 steps over the 20-day challenge period, with a maximum of 10,000 steps per day counted toward the total. In addition, participants must post two comments on the challenge board — one titled "One Early Symptom of Myocardial Infarction I Didn't Know About" and another titled "One Early Symptom of Stroke I Didn't Know About" — to be considered to have fully completed the challenge. The design goes beyond simple walking, encouraging participants to research and record disease-related information so they naturally absorb preventive knowledge.

During the challenge period, card-news content explaining the key early symptoms of myocardial infarction and stroke in an easy-to-understand format will also be posted on the board. Participants are expected to naturally acquire information on preventing and managing cerebrocardiovascular disease as they encounter this content while walking and writing their comments.

Prizes will be given to those who complete the challenge. Among participants who fulfill both the walking mission and the comment-writing mission, 100 will be selected by drawing to receive a three-grain gift set worth 10,000 won. An additional 300 participants will be separately selected from among those who complete only the walking mission to receive a commemorative gift worth 10,000 won. In total, 400 people will receive prizes.

A public health center official said, "Since prompt treatment within the golden hour is most critical for cerebrocardiovascular disease, knowing the early symptoms in advance and responding accordingly is key." The official added, "We hope this walking challenge will help residents build healthy walking habits and raise their interest in preventing cerebrocardiovascular disease and recognizing its early symptoms."

Residents seeking more information about the challenge can contact the Health Promotion Division of the Ongjin-gun County Public Health Center at 032-899-3153, or check the "Ongjin-gun Residents' Walking Room" community within the WalkOn application.
