The Incheon Metropolitan Government announced that it had successfully concluded the 1st Best Practice Contest in the Field of Mental Health, held to improve the quality of community mental health services and to recognize the dedication of service-providing organizations.

The contest was arranged for the first time this year to uncover outstanding cases of mental health service practice and spread them throughout the community. Under the theme ‘Tell Us Your Recovery Story! Show Us Your Organization’s Success,’ it ran from this past April through July, accepting entries from mental health service providers in the region across two categories, ‘Case Management’ and ‘Mental Health Programs.’

The submitted cases were evaluated on criteria such as expertise, creativity, effectiveness and potential for wider adoption. In the ‘Case Management’ category, the Seohae-gu Mental Health Welfare Center received the Grand Prize, the Namdong-gu Mental Health Welfare Center the Excellence Award, and the Namdong Psychiatric Rehabilitation Facility Grooteogi the Encouragement Award. In the ‘Mental Health Programs’ category, the Ongjin-gun Mental Health Welfare Center won the Grand Prize and the Yeonsu-gu Addiction Management Integrated Support Center the Excellence Award. The winning organizations received awards from the head of the Incheon Metropolitan Mental Health Welfare Project Support Group.

The contest is significant in that it officially identified and publicized the achievements of mental health services carried out on the front lines. Mental health work supports the recovery of local residents across a broad range of areas, including counseling, crisis intervention, rehabilitation and addiction management, yet its practical methods have remained scattered among individual organizations, making it difficult for excellent know-how to spread across the field as a whole.

Taking this into account, Incheon plans to produce the selected best practices as a booklet-style casebook and share it with mental health service providers in the region. The idea is to widely disseminate programs that can be used in the field and effective case-management methods, thereby raising the expertise of frontline workers and driving the overall advancement of community mental health services. This is meaningful in that not only residents who use a particular organization but citizens seeking mental health services throughout Incheon will be able to receive more proven support.

Kim Min-jeong, director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of the Incheon Metropolitan Government, said, ‘Through this best-practice contest, we were able to vividly confirm the diverse efforts and achievements of the frontline workers who devote themselves at the very forefront of community mental health.’ She added, ‘Going forward, we will continue to uncover and spread outstanding cases of practice from the field, and we will spare no administrative support so that Incheon’s 3.05 million citizens can enjoy higher-quality mental health services.’
