The Ministry of Science and ICT finalized and announced a set of division-director-level reassignments effective August 19, 2026. In the reshuffle, Senior Deputy Director Kim Tae-kyu (金兌奎) was named head of the Strategic Technology Development Division.
The Strategic Technology Development Division is the unit responsible for fostering strategic technologies at the national level and for the related policies, handling work directly tied to the mid- to long-term competitiveness of the science and technology sector. With a new official taking charge of the division, attention is turning to whether the direction of related policy efforts will shift.
A division-director-level appointment at a lead ministry carries weight because it is a personnel move that shapes the direction and pace of front-line policy. In particular, the strategic technology field has a significant impact on national industrial and security competitiveness and on people’s daily lives, so the makeup of the responsible division influences the stability and continuity of policy implementation.
