The Incheon Metropolitan Government has confirmed the on-site schedules for Gyeyang-gu and Michuhol-gu under its ‘nose-print registration’ pilot project, which uses the unique pattern on a dog’s nose, and will begin offering mobile, on-site registration in August. To ease the burden on participating residents, the city will fully cover even the cost of external animal registration.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it has confirmed the on-site schedules for Gyeyang-gu and Michuhol-gu under its ‘dog nose-print registration’ pilot project, aimed at the systematic management of dogs and the prevention of loss and abandonment, and that starting in August it will operate mobile registration services that come directly to residents’ living spaces.

Nose-print registration is a biometric method that uses the nose print, a dog’s unique nasal pattern, much like a human fingerprint. External identification tags are often lost or left unworn, while implanted microchips carry the discomfort of being inserted into the body. Nose-print registration overcomes these limitations without placing any additional burden on the dog, and is expected to help boost animal registration.

Gyeyang-gu and Michuhol-gu have confirmed their on-site registration schedules running from August through October. A specialized nose-print registration company will visit locations with high resident accessibility — such as apartment complexes, dog shelters, and community service centers — to operate pop-up registration booths and assist with registration on site.

Gyeyang-gu will combine door-to-door registration at apartment complexes with on-site registration at the Gyeyang Kkotmaru dog shelter. At the Gyeyang Kkotmaru dog shelter, nose-print registration will be held regularly every Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting August 22, while registration rounds at apartment complexes will run on a separate schedule. Michuhol-gu plans to conduct on-site registration by rotating through community service centers, apartment complexes, and parks, allowing residents to take part easily at a nearby location.

At present, nose-print registration is not recognized as official animal registration under the law. Accordingly, dogs that have not yet been registered must also complete external animal registration. To reduce the burden on participating residents during the pilot period, the city has decided to fully cover even the cost of external registration. As a result, not only residents of Gyeyang-gu and Michuhol-gu but also Incheon residents living in other counties and districts can receive the same free benefit by visiting the on-site booths. For residents who had been putting off registering their dogs due to the cost, the barrier to participation is effectively lowered.

Jang Se-hwan, head of Incheon City’s Agriculture and Livestock Division, said, ‘Registering your dog is the most basic obligation for responsible pet ownership and the establishment of a mature pet culture,’ adding, ‘We ask pet owners for their active interest and participation in this pilot project, which is coming directly into residents’ everyday spaces.’

Detailed schedules and participation methods for the pilot project can be found on the Incheon Companion Animal Welfare Platform (www.incheon.go.kr/animalwelfare) and on the Gyeyang-gu and Michuhol-gu websites.
