Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) is rolling out a food poisoning prevention campaign led by students themselves ahead of the new semester. The city announced that it will carry out the food poisoning prevention campaign together with Incheon Yunseul Elementary School for one week, from August 24 to 28.

The campaign was designed as part of the activities of the city’s children’s food poisoning prevention supporters, the Incheon Food Safety Guardians (IF-Heroes, Incheon Food safety Heroes). Rather than adults giving one-way instruction, its distinctive feature is a participatory program that helps students naturally put hygiene rules into practice in their daily lives.
During the campaign, students belonging to the Incheon Food Safety Guardians will greet their classmates in front of the school gate on the way to class, using banners and sashes carrying food poisoning prevention rules. They will conduct outreach activities encouraging good personal hygiene, such as proper handwashing.
At lunchtime, a food poisoning prevention quiz program will be held in the school cafeteria. It will be run in a self-directed format in which students read the questions and give the answers themselves, aiming to raise the interest of both students and staff while boosting the educational impact. Students who take part in the quiz will also receive practical promotional items inscribed with hygiene rules.
The early days of a new semester carry a particularly high risk of food poisoning, as temperatures fluctuate sharply and group meal service gets into full swing. This campaign is meaningful in that it focuses on having students grasp the need for hygiene on their own, so that prevention efforts carry over into everyday habits across both school and home.
Kim Min-jeong, director general of the city’s Health and Welfare Bureau, said, ‘The early part of the semester is a time when the risk of food poisoning rises due to sharp temperature changes and other factors, so we prepared this activity as a student-led campaign to help them raise their own awareness of hygiene.’ She added, ‘Going forward, we will continue to expand field-centered food poisoning outreach so that our children, the future generation, can enjoy healthy and safe school lives.’
