The Geomdan Prehistory Museum, operated by the Incheon Metropolitan City government (Mayor Park Chan-dae), will run its 11th Archaeology (Prehistory) Academy for adults from September 23 to October 21. This year’s program is organized around the theme ‘Foods Found in the Soil – The Dietary Lives of Ancient People Uncovered Through Excavation’ and consists of five sessions in total.

The Geomdan Prehistory Museum said it has prepared a public lecture series that examines the food and dining culture of our ancestors, from prehistoric times to the Joseon period, based on relics and traces of food identified through excavation.
Now in its 11th year, the Archaeology Academy has introduced prehistoric sites and culture to the public on the basis of the scholarly excavation achievements accumulated in the Incheon region. Continuing that tradition, this year’s program has a distinct character in that it approaches the lives of ancient people from the everyday perspective of ‘making a living.’ Tracing the changes at the dining table from the prehistoric era, when people relied on hunting and gathering, through to historical times, the program is designed to help participants understand the actual daily life revealed at excavation sites.
The main topics include the diets of the prehistoric era and of ancient Baekje, as well as the dietary life brought to light through the excavation survey of a Goryeo-era grain transport ship. In particular, by reconstructing ancient meals through excavated relics and traces of food, the program allows participants to explore the concrete daily lives of ancient people in ways that are difficult to grasp from viewing exhibitions alone.
A notable feature is that one of the five sessions is arranged as a field visit. Participants will view museum exhibitions related to dietary life in person and confirm on site what they have learned in the lectures. This is meaningful in that it broadens opportunities for lifelong learning in which citizens see and experience things for themselves, going beyond classroom instruction.
Applications will be accepted from 10 a.m. on August 31 to 6 p.m. on September 11. Participation is available through online registration via the Incheon Metropolitan City integrated reservation system website or by telephone (032-440-6795), and the course is entirely free of charge.
Jo Gyu-myeong, director of the Geomdan Prehistory Museum, said, ‘This program was designed to vividly reconstruct the story of everyday life and survival that contains the daily lives of ancient people, through the achievements of excavation,’ adding, ‘I hope it will be a meaningful time to experience history with all five senses, beyond simply viewing exhibitions.’
