The Ministry of Science and ICT (led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that a total of two consortium proposals were received in the public contest for participating teams in the ‘Development of a Cybersecurity-Specialized AI Foundation Model’ project, which was open from July 22 to August 26.
In order of submission, the SK Telecom consortium and the Naver Cloud consortium each filed a proposal.
The consortium led by SK Telecom Co., Ltd. put forward the project title ‘Development of a comprehensive cybersecurity-specialized AI foundation model family and demonstration of agentic security services based on the domestic cyber-threat environment.’ A total of 13 organizations joined this consortium as participating institutions, including Upstage, SK Shieldus, SECUI, AhnLab, Igloo Corporation, Raonsecure, Smart M2M, Aim Intelligence, Genians, PIOLINK, the Korea Information Security Industry Association, the Korea University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and the Soongsil University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation.
The consortium led by Naver Cloud proposed the project title ‘Development of an AI foundation model to internalize national cyber-security capabilities.’ A total of 32 organizations took part in this consortium, including LG CNS, the LG AI Research Institute of the LG Management Development Institute, LG Uplus, Logpresso, MarkAny, Bidraft, SANDS Lab, Sparrow, S2W, AI Spera, WINS, ESTsecurity, Jiransecurity, Tatum, Trillion Labs, Theori Korea, PnPSecure, HyperAccel, Korea Aerospace Industries, Hunesion, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, KEPCO KDN, the Financial Security Institute, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, the Digital Forensics Research Lab and the Artificial Intelligence Research Lab of the Korea University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Daegu University, Seoul National University, Chung-Ang University, the POSTECH Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, KAIST, and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said it will now review the suitability of the submitted documents and swiftly conduct a presentation evaluation involving outside experts, with the final results to be announced around early September.
This project aligns with state agenda items such as ‘building a nation that uses AI best in the world,’ ‘realizing an AI-based society for public safety and universal quality of life,’ and ‘establishing a robust digital security and safety system to sustain the AI era.’ By laying the groundwork for a domestic security AI capable of responding to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, it is expected to serve as a foundation for internalizing national cyber-security capabilities with homegrown technology and strengthening the safety of citizens’ digital lives.
The project is supported by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency and the Korea Internet & Security Agency as affiliated organizations. Inquiries can be directed to the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Information Security Industry Division (044-202-6450) or its AI Technology-Based Policy Division (044-202-6560).
