Ganghwa-gun has launched safety inspections of 55 steep slopes and vulnerable sections across the county, including areas damaged by the torrential rains this past July. The move is a field-focused disaster-prevention effort aimed at forestalling casualties and property loss.

Ganghwa-gun (headed by County Mayor Park Yong-cheol) announced on the 2nd that it is conducting safety inspections of 55 steep slopes and vulnerable sections within the county. The inspections will continue through September 30.

The 55 sites break down into 14 publicly owned facilities and 41 privately owned ones. They span natural and artificial slopes as well as apartment retaining-wall structures, road cuttings, and sites subject to development-activity and mountain-conversion permits. Because private facilities make up the majority of the targets, emphasis falls on examining the safety of sections that abut residents’ living spaces, such as slopes and retaining walls near homes.

Tailoring the effort to the characteristics of each facility, the county has formed a joint inspection team led by the Safety Management Division and joined by related departments including the Forest and Park Division, the Building Permit Division, and the Road and Traffic Division, which are checking the sites in person. The main focus is the safety condition of vulnerable sections such as natural slopes and cuttings. Inspectors are checking whether groundwater is seeping from slopes and whether cracks, subsidence, or bulging have appeared, while also examining whether sediment such as soil and fallen leaves has accumulated. Such signs can lead to collapse or rockfall, making early detection a key to preventing damage.

In particular, emergency safety inspections joined by private experts were carried out on the road cutting at Boreum-do-ri, Seodo-myeon, and the retaining wall at the Hajeom Industrial Complex, both of which sustained actual damage during the recent downpour. Based on the inspection results, the county plans to determine the causes of the damage and prepare repair and reinforcement measures so that the same damage is not repeated.

Ganghwa County Mayor Park Yong-cheol said, ‘We will do our utmost to restore damage such as home flooding and soil loss caused by the recent downpour, while also carrying out continuous inspections of disaster-vulnerable areas.’ He added, ‘We will further strengthen field-centered safety management so that we can prevent the loss of life and property caused by natural disasters.’

Inquiries related to the inspections can be directed to the Disaster Management Team of Ganghwa-gun’s Safety Management Division (032-930-3495).
