The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Eun-young) has created 「STUDIO 50: CARRÉ DE NATURE」, a participatory exhibition space in its Natural History Hall where citizens themselves record and display nature and science. It is a new attempt that moves away from one-way presentation of content produced by the museum, allowing exhibitions to begin from the interests and experiences of visitors.

The National Science Museum is unveiling 「STUDIO 50: CARRÉ DE NATURE」 in its Natural History Hall, an open exhibition space that can be arranged in various ways depending on the exhibition content by combining square modules measuring 50 cm on each side. True to its name, which means ‘the square of nature,’ each small frame holds a story of nature seen through an individual perspective, and these are gathered together to complete a single exhibition.

This exhibition space was created to expand demand-driven, participatory exhibitions that reflect visitors’ interests and experiences, going beyond supplier-centered exhibitions in which the museum simply conveys content it has planned to the audience. When citizens propose stories of nature and science that they have observed, recorded, collected, and created themselves, these are turned into actual museum exhibitions. Anyone interested in nature and science can take part, and content may be submitted in various forms, including photographs, drawings, and observation records. Exhibition participants and their content are selected through a public open call.

This is meaningful in that it seeks to transform the science museum from a space for viewing completed knowledge into a space where citizens create knowledge themselves. It aims for a virtuous cycle in which everyday observation and record-keeping lead to exhibitions, and those exhibitions in turn spark the curiosity of other visitors.

The first exhibition is 「Urban Sketchers × National Science Museum Drawing Day」. Members of ‘Urban Sketchers Daejeon’ visited the Natural History Hall on a closed day this past February and drew works based on their direct observation of the hall and its exhibits, which will be on display from September 8. In that the Natural History Hall as seen through the eyes of citizens becomes an exhibition of the museum once again, it is an exhibition that symbolically embodies the purpose of 「STUDIO 50: CARRÉ DE NATURE」.

Next, the first open call for citizen-participation exhibitions will run from September 21 to October 8. The exhibition selected through the open call will be presented as STUDIO 50’s second exhibition beginning November 10, and the third exhibition is scheduled to take place at the end of the year to coincide with the Christmas season.

Director Lee Eun-young stated, ‘「STUDIO 50: CARRÉ DE NATURE」 is a new attempt that goes a step further than the museum conveying stories to visitors, so that exhibitions begin from the interests and experiences of the visitors themselves,’ adding, ‘We will develop it into an open exhibition space where citizens’ everyday observations and records become the museum’s content and lead to the curiosity and participation of other visitors.’
