The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA, led by Administrator Lee Mi-sun) announced six winning teams of the 「Weather·Climate Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hackathon Competition」 on September 9 through the KMA website (www.kma.go.kr/kma). The event was designed to discover experiential educational content that combines weather and climate data with AI technology, and to find the talent who will lead the artificial intelligence transformation (AX) in the weather and climate field.

This competition was arranged not merely to introduce AI technology, but to prepare for the era of artificial intelligence transformation (AX), in which entire work processes are reorganized around artificial intelligence, by discovering outstanding talent equipped with the relevant capabilities and securing creative educational content.
Applications opened on June 8, drawing a total of 206 teams. After stage-by-stage evaluation, including a document review of development plans and a presentation review of the developed works, six teams were ultimately selected as award winners.

The Grand Prize went to team ‘A-meng’, which developed content allowing middle school students to experience decision-making across various weather-related occupations. The Best Award was given to team ‘Mallang-i Research Lab’ (말랑이연구소), which developed content for elementary school students that helps them grasp the concept of weather by combining meteorological elements. The Excellence Awards went to team ‘Antigravity’ and team ‘Climate Detective Squad’ (기후탐정단), while the Encouragement Awards went to team ‘WeatherMind’ and team ‘J4_208’.

The winning works commonly adopted an experiential and participatory approach in which content responds to the learner’s actions and the results can be verified firsthand. Moving away from conventional education that delivered weather and climate information in a one-way manner, the works are expected to enhance learning immersion and comprehension by allowing learners to interact with the content and explore scientific principles on their own. In that young learners come to perceive weather and climate not as unfamiliar knowledge but as an experience they handle directly, this can serve as a foundation for raising citizens’ climate literacy.
The KMA plans to refine the winning works through an enhancement process to increase their practical usability, and to utilize them in future public weather and climate science education settings.

KMA Administrator Lee Mi-sun said, ‘This competition was a meaningful occasion that broadened the scope of educational content and presented new learning experiences through the fusion of weather and climate data with artificial intelligence technology.’ She added, ‘As the participants’ fresh ideas have been realized into results that can be used in the field, we will continue to actively support the expansion of opportunities for talented individuals to demonstrate their capabilities, so that outstanding achievements can lead to weather and climate education.’
