The Songam Art Museum, operated by the Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae), announced that it will run the adult course ‘Songam Art Academy’ every Wednesday from October 7 to 21.

Held under the theme ‘A Journey Through Buddhist Art with a Curator,’ the course features researchers who formerly worked at the Songam Art Museum as instructors. They will personally walk citizens through the history of Korean Buddhist art along with the stories woven into the relics held in the museum’s collection. Because participants go beyond simply viewing the displayed relics to explore the faith, history and artistic background contained within them, the course offers a depth that sets it apart from an ordinary museum visit.

The program consists of three sessions in total. The first, titled ‘Exploring Incheon Buddhist Paintings from the Museum,’ centers on Joseon-era and modern Buddhist painting. The second session, ‘An Eye for Buddhist Statues,’ covers Korean Buddhist sculpture as a whole. The final session concludes with ‘Goryeo Stone Pagodas, Dreaming of a Buddha Land,’ focusing on the Buddhism and pagoda faith of the Goryeo Dynasty.

All sessions run every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Detailed information, including the schedule and how to apply, can be found on the Songam Art Museum website. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the Incheon Metropolitan City online integrated reservation system or by telephone, and other inquiries can be directed to the museum website or by phone (☎032-440-6781).

Choi Jun-su, director of the Songam Art Museum, said, ‘Since the lectures will be delivered directly by researchers who have studied the museum’s relics, this will be an opportunity to encounter a wide range of stories about Korean Buddhist art and the museum’s collection,’ adding, ‘We hope citizens will show great interest and take part.’

This academy carries significance in that it translates specialized research achievements into the language of ordinary citizens, lowering the threshold for understanding local cultural heritage. Attention is turning to whether it will establish itself as a venue for lifelong learning where local residents can directly learn about and enjoy Buddhist art in the Incheon region.
