The city of Incheon has held a participatory quiz competition for migrant workers, who are easily left out of safety education because of the language barrier, in a bid to raise awareness of industrial-accident prevention. Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that on the 6th it held the 2026 Migrant Workers Safety Quiz Competition-Challenge! Safety Golden Bell in the auditorium of the Incheon Migrant Workers Support Center, with some 200 migrant workers taking part.

The event was part of the Regional Support Project to Close Blind Spots in Serious-Accident Prevention, jointly promoted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the city of Incheon. It was designed to help prevent accidents and raise the safety awareness of migrant workers, who tend to be excluded from workplace safety information because of differences in language and culture.

The competition centered on fields that workers must know both on the job and in daily life, including industrial safety, everyday safety, fire prevention and emergency first aid. Alongside O·X questions in which participants moved to the area marking their answer, multiple-choice and short-answer questions were also posed, heightening engagement. In particular, relevant safety rules and accident-response tips were explained in detail immediately after each question, so the event delivered real educational value rather than serving as a mere contest.

Participants who had built up their knowledge using safety-education materials distributed in advance competed keenly through preliminary and final rounds, and ten participants of Myanmar nationality took home the honors. In addition to the quiz, the day featured a variety of programs including a K-POP celebratory performance, an awards ceremony and a lucky draw, drawing an enthusiastic response from participants.

This year, Incheon has steadily provided customized industrial-safety education tailored to major countries of origin, including Myanmar, the Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia and Vietnam. Going forward, the city plans to expand hands-on safety experience programs and produce and distribute multilingual safety videos, strengthening field-oriented support so that migrant workers can learn safety rules without language constraints.

Migrant workers are a key part of the workforce filling labor shortages at Incheon’s industrial sites, yet they often find it hard to access the very information they need to protect their own safety. By having participants absorb safety rules through hands-on participation rather than stiff lectures, the event carries significance in widening the path from education to actual accident prevention on the ground.

Han Gyo-dong, head of the city’s Overseas Koreans Cooperation Division, said, ‘Migrant workers are a key part of the workforce that sustains Incheon’s industrial sites,’ adding, ‘We will keep up meticulous, field-oriented prevention efforts so that no one is left out of safety education because of language differences, and build Incheon into a city where everyone is safe.’
