The Ministry of Science and ICT (led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that on September 10, Second Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung met with UAE Ambassador to Korea Jamal Abdulla Al Suwaidi and exchanged views on key issues in the digital sector, including AI, and on the direction of cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting was arranged to mark the arrival of the new UAE ambassador to Korea. The two sides reviewed the major projects and exchanges the two countries have pursued in the AI and ICT fields, and discussed ways to identify new opportunities for cooperation based on shared interests.
In particular, both sides shared the view that AI is a key field driving innovation across industry and society as a whole. On this basis, they agreed on the need to further solidify ties between the two countries through the sharing of policy experience, personnel exchanges, and communication among relevant institutions and companies.
The two sides agreed to maintain close communication so that the discussions would not remain at the government level alone but would lead to tangible results by expanding the participation of the private sector and related institutions. This is understood as an effort to extend inter-state cooperation—which can easily stop at summit-level agreements or declarations—into actual industrial sites and exchanges among researchers and businesses.
Second Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung said, ‘Korea and the UAE are good partners that can draw on each other’s strengths in the digital sector, including AI,’ adding, ‘We will continue to actively seek concrete opportunities for cooperation, focusing on the areas of shared interest between the two countries.’
Newly appointed UAE Ambassador Al Suwaidi also said, ‘Korea and the UAE have great potential to develop together in the fields of AI and advanced technology,’ adding, ‘We will continue to make active efforts to invigorate exchanges between the two countries and create new opportunities for cooperation.’
The UAE, a Middle Eastern oil-producing nation, has recently been moving away from an oil-dependent economy, making AI a driver of its future national growth and continuing large-scale investments. Cooperation with Korea, which aspires to become a digital powerhouse, is therefore expected to bring mutual benefits to both countries.
