The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) will run an autumn science culture program under the theme ‘Retro & Future’ over the two months from October through November, featuring exhibitions, festivals, performances, hands-on activities, expeditions and lectures. A distinctive feature is that special programs have been arranged around autumn’s key dates — National Foundation Day, Hangeul Day, Halloween, the museum’s anniversary and the college entrance exam (Suneung) — so that visitors can enjoy a fresh experience each time they come.

This autumn’s program stands out for linking the museum’s signature content — dinosaurs, space, artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge technology — with special events tied to each period. Over the two months, options have been prepared for every generation to take part, from young children and teenagers to families and adults, allowing visitors to enjoy science culture in the way that suits them best.

October’s flagship program is the ‘Retro Future Festival’, running from National Foundation Day on the 3rd through the 18th. Visitors become the mentor of a newly awakened baby robot named ‘G1’, developing the robot’s body, language and intelligence, with the core idea of connecting the games of the past with the technology of the future. Traditional games such as the ‘Retro Sports Day Energy Race’, ‘Red Light, Green Light’ and ‘ttakji-chigi’ (a Korean pog-flipping game) are offered alongside ‘AI Motion Sports’, a ‘Nintendo Ring Fit Showdown’ and an ‘AR Exhibition Hall Tour Mission’, so that generations can enjoy them together through physical play. The games of the parents’ generation become new content for children, and traditional games are given a chance to meet future technologies such as AI and AR.

Around October 9, Hangeul Day programs will be held, including ‘A Hangeul Day Worth Stargazing’, a ‘Hangeul Day Special Observation Session’, a ‘Mother-of-Pearl Hangeul Keyring’ making activity, and ‘Hangeul Splash, Science Boom’. During the Halloween season at the end of October, distinctive expedition and mission programs drawing on dinosaurs, insects and natural history will be offered, such as ‘Challenge and Go: Halloween Edition’, ‘Stamp Tour — Find Hero-nyang’, ‘A Thousand and One Spooky Games’, ‘The Mysterious Natural History Hall: Do Not Wake the Dinosaurs’, and ‘A Suspicious Week at the Insect Hall (Spider Commentary)’.

Nighttime programs aimed at adult visitors are also notable. On the last night of October, ‘Jazz and Physics’, a fusion science concert blending physics and jazz, will unfold in the central hall, transforming the museum into a jazz club. On November 27, ‘On Space’, an evening fusion experience program for adults that spans science, philosophy and art and contemplates the meaning of space in music and literature, will be held.

In November, the museum’s permanent content will also complete a renewal. On the anniversary of the opening on the 14th, anniversary programs including the ‘AI Modern Civil Service Exam On-Site Finals’ will be run, and on the 24th the Advanced Technology Hall and the Science Exploration Hall will newly open their doors. The Advanced Technology Hall will present exhibitions on hydrogen energy and AI, while the Science Exploration Hall will feature a total of 26 new exhibits — including 20 electricity- and electromagnetic-wave-related items such as an ‘Electromagnetic Wave Balance Game’ created in collaboration with the Korea Electric Power Corporation, and 6 items illustrating scientific principles in everyday life, such as an ‘Air Cannon’.

Education and lectures will also continue over the two months. In particular, a special science program for students taking the college entrance exam and events such as a ‘Supermoon Live Broadcast & Observation’ broaden the options for teenagers looking to spend time with friends in a different way after the exam.

Lee Chung-won, director of the Gwacheon National Science Museum, said, ‘This autumn festival is a single story connecting the science we have passed through, the science we experience now, and the science we will meet in the future,’ adding, ‘I hope that this autumn, families, teenagers and adults alike will be able to discover a new kind of enjoyment at the museum that suits each of them.’

Detailed information, including the schedule and registration methods for each program, can be found on the Gwacheon National Science Museum website (www.sciencecenter.go.kr).
