Following its inaugural concert, the Incheon Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra will present an expanded repertoire and ensemble at this second regular concert. For a youth orchestra not yet six months old to stage regular concerts in such a short span reflects an effort to systematically nurture local musical talent, and it holds significance in broadening opportunities for professional stage experience among young people in the Incheon region.
The concert’s theme, 《Ieum (二音)》, carries the twin meanings of ‘two’ and ‘connection.’ The fact that it is the orchestra’s second regular concert, a concerto featuring the two instruments of violin and cello, and a program that links the works of two composers, Dvořák and Brahms, on a single stage are all reflected in the theme. The orchestra added that it also seeks to connect the region and its citizens through the medium of music.
The highlight of the performance is Brahms’s 《Double Concerto》, conducted by Jung Han-gyeol. The soloists are violinist Lee Ji-hye, a professor in the Department of Instrumental Music at the Korea National University of Arts, and cellist Moon Tae-guk, a professor in the Department of Orchestral Music at Yonsei University’s College of Music. As these two top-tier performers, who also mentor younger musicians, take the stage alongside the youth ensemble, a cross-generational collaboration unfolds. The timbres of the two instruments, independent yet complementary, symbolically embody ‘Ieum,’ the theme of this concert.
The program opens with Dvořák’s 《Slavonic Dance No. 8》, a piece marked by the vitality and lively rhythms characteristic of Slavic folk music. The finale is crowned by Dvořák’s 《Symphony No. 8》, in which the lyricism of nature blends with dynamic rhythm. Through a program that moves from a bright, spirited dance to a majestic symphony, audiences can experience the varied facets of Dvořák’s music in one setting.
An official of the Incheon Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra said, ‘Our members have honed their expertise through mentoring by members of the Incheon Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra,’ adding, ‘Just like ‘Incheon e-eum,’ which is familiar to Incheon citizens, we hope this performance becomes an occasion to warmly connect people and the region through the medium of music.’
The 2nd Regular Concert 《Ieum (二音)》 is open to viewers of elementary school age and older (born before 2019), with all seats free of charge. Tickets can be reserved in advance, up to four per person, on the Incheon Culture and Arts Center website.
