The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that its Incheon Library will run ‘Bookshelf Built Together with Citizens,’ a reading program in which residents take part directly, from September 28 to November 30 at Incheon Library and the Songdo International Organizations Library, in celebration of Korea’s Book Day on October 11.

Korea’s Book Day was established in 1987 by the Korean Publishers Association to commemorate October 11, the day the Tripitaka Koreana was completed. Marking the occasion, Incheon Library organized the event to raise citizens’ interest in reading and to spread a reading culture of empathy and communication through books.

A distinctive feature of this event is that it is a participatory program in which citizens do not merely observe but lend a hand to fill the bookshelf themselves. The program consists of three parts: ‘A Librarian’s Cherished Books,’ ‘Citizens’ Life-Changing Book Curation,’ and ‘Finding the Missing Books.’

In ‘A Librarian’s Cherished Books,’ 24 books treasured by library staff are wrapped and displayed, and participants guess the book titles based on memorable sentences or keywords presented in connection with each book and submit their entries. A drawing is held among those with correct answers, and the winners receive the books.

‘Citizens’ Life-Changing Book Curation’ is a program that selects and displays some of the books recommended by residents. It was designed to let citizens share the books that changed their lives along with their reading experiences, and to encounter the diverse reading tastes of other residents.

‘Finding the Missing Books’ presents a list of books whose whereabouts are unknown and has participants locate them on the library shelves. Books that are found are provided with a souvenir after a verification process, and the program was designed so that, in the course of searching, citizens can examine the library’s materials and shelves for themselves. Participants receive a small souvenir for each program.

This event is meaningful in that it seeks to expand reading beyond an individual activity into a shared culture in which citizens exchange their tastes and experiences. The aim is to use the library not simply as a space for borrowing books but as a place of communication where neighbors share stories.

Han Su-mi, director of the city’s Incheon Library, said, ‘Through this event, in which citizens take part directly to complete the bookshelf together on Book Day, I hope people will encounter the diverse reading tastes and stories about books held by other citizens and library staff, and share their reading experiences with one another,’ adding, ‘We will continue to create various opportunities for reading so that a reading culture can take root naturally in citizens’ daily lives.’
