Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on civil-military health care cooperation with the Marine Corps Yeonpyeong Unit on the 7th. The agreement gives formal backing to medical cooperation between the military and the local community, which has continued for more than 10 years to improve access to medical care for residents of Yeonpyeong Island, where medical resources are scarce.

The Yeonpyeong Unit has long supported medical treatment for Yeonpyeong Island residents through its military medical facility, the Gongryong Clinic. In particular, since forming a sisterhood partnership with the Yeonpyeong Public Health Subcenter in 2013, it has steadily provided medical support for the health and safety of local residents. On an island without sufficient medical institutions, the military medical facility has served as an important route to health care for residents.
The agreement was drawn up to further solidify the civil-military health care cooperation system on the basis of this relationship. The two sides agreed to link the local public health care system with military medical resources and to continue supporting medical services for residents within the medical conditions and treatment capacity of the Gongryong Clinic.
With the link between the public health care system and military medical resources strengthened under the agreement, access to medical care for Yeonpyeong Island residents is expected to improve, helping to fill gaps in medical coverage.
"Building on our cooperation with the local community to date, we will contribute to the health and safety of residents and continue to maintain a close cooperative relationship with Ongjin-gun County," the commander of the Yeonpyeong Unit said.
"I thank the Yeonpyeong Unit for working together for the health and safety of Yeonpyeong residents for so long," said Ongjin-gun County Governor Jang Jeong-min. "We will continue to build a medical safety net through civil-military cooperation that gives residents peace of mind."
With cooperation that had continued informally now established in a written agreement, observers say a sustainable foundation for cooperation has been laid to address gaps in medical care in island areas.
