The National Science Museum (Director Lee Eun-young) will launch ‘Science Busking,’ a new program that brings science experiments and hands-on activities directly to where visitors are, starting in October. Its core feature is a two-way format in which the content and direction of the experiments change according to visitors’ questions and reactions.

The National Science Museum announced that it is introducing ‘Science Busking,’ an impromptu live science show that uses a mobile experiment cart to reach visitors wherever they are. The program breaks away from the mold of conventional science programs held in fixed classrooms; much like street performers who busk while communicating with their audience, it moves throughout the museum to meet visitors and unfolds a variety of scientific phenomena through experiments and hands-on activities right before their eyes.

Its most distinctive feature is the two-way format. Moving away from the one-directional approach of demonstrating experiments in a set sequence, the program allows visitors to ask questions on the spot, and depending on those questions, presenters can switch to new experiments or let visitors confirm results immediately in real time. In effect, visitors’ curiosity shapes the flow of the program.

To make this possible, the National Science Museum built its own mobile experiment cart capable of carrying a range of experimental tools and hands-on materials from place to place. Rather than simple experiment demonstrations, the program is centered on hands-on participation, letting visitors experience scientific principles firsthand.

Science Busking will run every Friday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. starting in October. It will initially be held mainly around the Science Tunnel, and going forward it will be operated flexibly in various spaces within the museum depending on visitor traffic, weather, and on-site conditions.

Director Lee Eun-young said, ‘Interest in science begins with small moments of curiosity and questions,’ adding, ‘I hope Science Busking will serve as an opportunity to bring visitors and science closer together, and we will continue to create diverse opportunities for anyone to experience science easily and enjoyably.’

Based on the outcomes and visitor responses, the National Science Museum plans to develop Science Busking content into a systematic curriculum and expand it to science museums nationwide to enhance the program’s utility. It is significant in that it moves science experiences—where visitors ask questions and participate directly—one step closer into everyday life, going beyond standardized exhibition viewing.
